I mean knowing how to read is one half of the battle for sure .. I don't know how pertinent it is to being able to spell words properly though.

I know, "Hell, can we just learn to spell and write in general, instead of making the internet do it for us?" is is not grammatically correct. No comma is needed after the word "general."
