Am I weird for not playing ranked?

Topic.

Just saw a thread where someone was begging Riot to keep URF as a permanent game mode.

Someone pointed out that it will never happen and it's already lackluster because everyone figured out the OP champions last year and they are the only ones that get picked anymore. The said it will go away eventually and everyone will just go back to playing ranked.

Made me think about how I have not once played Ranked. If I'm playing League, I'm either playing a bot to practice with a newly purchased champ or I'm playing TB with a couple other people I regularly team up with. Even if I'm not with them, I'm still probably setting up a TB.

Ranked defeats the purpose of the game.

At least for me.

I play this game to have fun. Use the characters I find interesting and play with builds and strategies that may not be optimal.

Ranked is zero fun, all winning. The player base is extremely toxic in ranked and everything from the champion selection screen to the end of the game is filled with finger pointing, insults and denial of responsibilities.

In blinds, TB and aram, people are truly there to have fun. I haven't had a rager in any of those modes since I started playing again last month (took a 6 month hiatus because I did try ranked for a while and it left me hating the game.)

I do a lot of blind or draft pick and then the occasional ARAM. I don't play ranked because I'm just not interested.

I've never played ranked either cause I just play this game for fun and with all the things I've heard about the toxicity of ranked, well, that's no fun.

If I was able to get together a whole team for ranked, though, I would try it, but still only for fun, like just to see how high we could get together.

I don't play ranked because I'm afraid I'll suck.

If you don't want to play ranked, there's no reason you would need to. I've had friends who refused to play anything except bots or in-house customs because they didn't want to deal with random people. I've played ranked, but I mostly stick to Teambuilder and ARAM. Team builder because I can play who I want, and ARAMs when I want something short, don't have to take too seriously, or can't decide which champion to play.

I did a little bit of ranked last year. I climbed a decent amount in a relatively short time (Bronze 1 to Silver 4 in 70 games), and I feel like I could have kept climbing, but I haven't played a single ranked game this season.

I think that's been two reasons why.

  • The first is it felt like all balance went out the window for several patches, and has only started to level out again with the last two patches.
  • The second (and perhaps more important) is that I love playing this game with friends, and ranked seems biased against playing with a few friends. When I queued up with my wife, the match making was very noticeably harder, such that we lost most of the games we played together. It felt like I was being punished for playing with her. I could maybe make a 5v5 team and see different results, but it's uncommon for me to have a fifth friend on who can actually play.

Maybe the adjusted match making is a good idea at higher elos where they think a lot more about how well picks work together, but I'm still at the elo where people mostly pick their best champion at a role and go with it.

Anyway, one is my friends keeps asking about when I'll play ranked this season, and I honestly can't say.

Its not weird. For some people this is just a game to have fun with, and assigning a value to it adds stress or takes some of the fun away.
