I'm scared to ask how old he is, and I'd why he's in there could happen to anyone or is caused by him doing something stereotypical of his age?

Scary moment to be sure. I remember when I got a call from my Dad explaining that doctors had found a hole in my sister's heart. I was away from home and wasn't going to be able to be in phone contact as things unfolded. It was pretty nerve racking. That said, since the surgery she's had more energy to do things, so not every scary moment ends in bad things happening.
I'm 26 now, and if there's one thing I've learned it's that God doesn't give up on us, no matter how stupid we've been. I encourage you to pray for your brother too.
