Why Doesn't Anyone Care About The Toxic Community?

Why doesn't anyone care about the awful community?

I have loved LoL since the moment I started playing it 3 years ago. It is easily my favourite game in existence when looking strictly at the game play itself. But I have been at the breaking point for years in regards to the community. And it just seems like no one cares and it doesn't get any better.

Since I started playing this game in S2 the community has been incredibly toxic. Every game you join you have someone in your game trolling, trash talking, or just BMing in general. Sure you can mute and you can report but it doesn't do anything. And why should we have to? Why are these people allowed to ruin the game for others?

People act like this because they can get away with it. LoL has the absolute worst community I have ever seen on a game. And I have played a lot of games in my 23 years. LoL is perhaps the worst community in gaming history.

We get all these promises about how they are going to reward positive play and punish negative play and IT NEVER HAPPENS. I've waited 3 years for this community to be improved but Riot is not willing to make the implementation to do so.

And no one cares but I officially don't enjoy this game anymore because the community has ruined it for me. I'm going to go play the thousands of other online games with respectful player bases that help and better each other instead of chop down and insult each other.

Part of the reason we call it 'toxicity' is because it spreads; one player starts saying bad things, another player gets agitated and contributes to the overall toxicity of the game. What we see time and time again is the players who see toxicity in more of their games often are being toxic in them as well.

I would ask the OP -- and anyone else who feels they see toxic players in all of their games -- to take a moment and consider that perhaps there's something they can be doing differently to reduce the amount of toxicity in their games. In cases of verbal abuse, being quick to just mute someone who is verbally abusive fixes so many situations.

@Slumber Jack

Honestly, this game has been advancing so well with so many new concepts, champions, game modes, skins, ect.. but the one thing I have noticed more than ever is that almost every game you are in, even if you say not a word and ping mia or so forth people are going to attack you. Since the tribunal went away I have noticed it steadily increasing more and more as time passes. the other day, the top laner made one mistake, and mispinged he needed help. The ADC flipped on him , called him retarded amongst many other things. So I told him to quit it and stop being a jerk, that it was a team and we had to act like one to win. He goes "stfu bitch, I am going to carry your horrible asses anyways" Then I responded with, if you continue this attitude I will report you. The person then decides to brag about how he doesn't get in trouble, that Riot does shit for it, he has been playing 5 years gets reported all the time and never gets in trouble for it. This isn't the first time I have seen this. People have even gone as far in matches from what I have seen , 2 people premade together, one is harassing another player, that person mutes them. So the guy says "sorry but I am muting you please use pings." The friend then starts typing out everything the guy that was muted was saying so his friend can continue to torture that player. "MUTE" doesn't always work sadly. A large group of us who have played for many years, mostly play only with each other now because of how toxic it can be. The tribunal at least deterred people a little more, because one person that can rage I knew had gotten suspended while it was around, now that it isn't I refuse to play matches with him even because there isn't a game he isn't treating people like shit and he never gets punished for it anymore so he simply doesn't care. I really wish you guys would stop with the crazy game modes for a moment, and some other things to fix this and make game play more enjoyable and hold people accountable for their actions.

My 2 cents: I've been playing this game for awhile now (>4.5 years) and the community has improved dramatically from when I started.

A couple months ago I started getting empirical with my approach to reviewing the toxicity in a day of playing LoL. Generally only one in five games or less had someone toxic and I found that by calling them out on it generally made then stop.

I mostly play teambuilder now, but even when I venture into other queues I don't see higher levels of toxicity.

Try performing this experiment: after every match, write a note if there was someone toxic in the game. If there was, ask yourself if there was anything you could have done to head the toxicity off. Could you have asked people to calm down? To stop insulting the jungler who got his buffs taken early? Then next time you see someone being toxic step in and try to get people to vain down and play.

I see a lot of posts asking Riot to fix the community, but they have a different perspective then us, the regular players. If every player were to step in when someone was being toxic the community would improve faster then it would of we wait for Riot to invent the magic bullet that will fix it. The bullet doesn't exist. They are trying their best, but we as a community also have a responsibility to help, not just complain.

For me, I dont mind the flaming and trash talk. What pisses me off is people who try to lose when someone says something they dont like and the large part of this community that does not try to get better at the game.

I can't say I see all that much toxicity. What I can agree on is that when I do see it in unranked no one seems to care. I think rito have created this environment where only ranked games are treated seriously and people can and do act however they want in normals.

I enjoy a toxic environment. I used to spend hours on old MMORPGs like City of Villains just sitting in trade centres and waiting for a fight to break out, then jumping right in to get involved. :P

I consider myself an antihero!

Also I'm handsome?

I agree since I started playing like 5 hours yesterday and another 3 hours today, Normal Drafts because of restrictions for being spam reported by Toxic players, I am starting to encounter the same type of toxic players in Normal Draft a lot more now.

All day almost every game I have had players (Trolling) in champion select, I communicate where I am going, and they troll intentionally throwing off game-play making it hard on all of us then threaten to report in one case I got behavior warning the other day after having players do this.

Today the same thing almost every game all day, I have had Many Toxic experiences in Champion Select again, players who do the same behavior who don't pay attention to chat even if they are 2 picks after me they are like "No Go Top" because they don't agree with things like LuLu Mid, or Lee-Sin Bot for example, and they get toxic taking the role and throwing the game off then "Spam The Report Button".

Besides champion select Trolling which is the most common within the last 48 hours its been super bad with this type of toxicity I have encountered a few games of players intentionally throwing off games by doing in game things like yesterday I had two players run in my lane, Feed my lane, then threaten reports when the game goes bad because they can't change game-play after feeding my lane or help at all, and Today in one game I had two players being toxic in chat demanding lane swap after (Feeding) and then a third player harassing chat.

I just reported them all, But I feel nothing is being taken seriously to improve the behavior of game experience, because for sure we need a Role Finder, and players who pay attention to chat in champion select rather than make judgments for other players and tell them (No GO X Position Instead) and ruin the game.

On the bright side games where players actually do not display champion select toxicity or in game toxicity the game experience has been a lot better and more wins just something to keep in mind.

someone instalocks a role you called? Play another lane ( even if you already locked in adc, fuck it adc bot and top?) trash talk? Mute. Afk? Play safe. There's solutions to lots of the problems, people just don't want to do anything about it. People always want to play the victim. Just adjust to the conditions the trolls have set for you, and keep playing. Sure you'll lose probably but at least you learn a little in the process. Make everything a positive experience instead of pointless bitching. I have played for almost two years now and I have yet to feel like this game is too toxic. It's just about your attitude and willingness to adjust.

Actually the community isn't as toxic as people tend to think it is.

For the most part, almost all people who complain about the community being toxic are toxic a lot themselves.

There's a lot of reasons and correlations to this of course.

EL HAMSTERO5/19/2015, 7:55:30 AM2 votes

there is more cause in LoL for negativity than in any other game. why? well in any other video game if you are not having fun or are playing with someone you don't like, you can just leave. in LoL you are likely trapped in that game for 40+ minutes.

there is no escape unless you want to face riots penalties. being locked in a place where you do not want to be for that long is a sure way to cause negativity. I have been in games where it feels like slow torture. im honestly surprised there isn't more toxicity.

ShaftyMegee5/18/2015, 7:54:28 PM2 votes

As the largest played game in the world it would be hard to handle that many assholes. Though I think that riot needs to step it up a little. Perhaps tweak the way reports are bandled?

Why Doesn't Anyone Care About The Toxic Community?

Plenty of people care. It's just a bit hard to fix because the human community is a problem a bit outside of the scope of Riot Games.

chipi995/19/2015, 11:20:41 PM2 votes

A lot of games would be toxic if your teamates performance greatly affected how the match goes.

B3ER5/20/2015, 10:35:34 AM2 votes

We do care, we just don't have enough means to help enforce it ourselves. When the Trib was up, I was happy to participate in the cleansing. Now I just have to idly watch games go to shit. What's taking so long, Rito?

Zero Shingetsu5/18/2015, 8:06:21 PM1 votes

Probably... because so many people are toxic that they don't even notice when others are toxic. Assholes only notice assholes when they're acting like assholes to EACHOTHER; otherwise, they just shrug.

And I do care that you're leaving, in fact, because I've been in your position several times. Every time Riot pulls some gimmicky shit to draw me back in, curse them... I, for one, hope you enjoy whatever games you do pursue. I suggest Final Fantasy XIV for an MMORPG, or Heroes of the Storm for a MOBA. HotS has no postgame chat, no all chat, and even permits you to easily block ALL team chat if you're so inclined, so zero toxicity. :D

Plus, IMO, it's just a better game in every way. (Sorry Riot! Don't meant to step on toes, just an opinion.)
