Reworks, Refunds, and Rengar
I've had the idea in my head for a while now that, in the case of a rework (VGU only), any player owning that champion/skins for it should get refunds that can only be used on that champion and its skins. I was prompted to write this post because I've gotten to the point where I'm done with Rengar. I have put in a lot of time with this champion, getting him to rank 7 on two accounts and owning all of his skins on each of the same two accounts, but I feel like now I want my IP/RP back. After Riot reworked my main into a clunky bruiser, I was annoyed but accepting. Sure, he's different, but he's still relevant, still strong. After the first round or two of nerfs, I was a little disappointed, but I understood the need- he was busted. By the time (now) Riot hammered Rengar with something like the fifth round of gutting on his Q and W, I was done. Sure, he's banned all the time. That's because most players don't actually know anything about the game and keep on banning Rengar because 'I mean hey he was OP when they released his rework so i mean why not'. From my experience getting abck into playing Rengar, he was moderately strong - if played well - to moderately weak. He really lost his identity with the rework and honestly doesn't fit into any team that I've played. The closest I got to a meaningful effect on the outcome of the game was splitpushing, and we have Tryandemere, Yi, Tristana and Nasus for that. He is no longer remotely playable toplane (where I played him pre-rework) and feels inferior to many simpler, less mechanically intensive junglers. Champions like Shyvana or Xin Zhao (One of my new favorites) have the luxury of almost zero risk and the potential for massive reward. To top it all off, Rengar has been nerfed in almost every patch I've seen. It's comparable to an appeasement situation: Round 1 - yeah sure I guess he was too strong. Round 2 - meh ok fine he was sort of overtuned. Take some more off his Q why not. Round 3 - Yeah his W heals too much. Round 4 - Yeah his W shouldn't grant immunity to CC. His Q might be a bit too strong still. Ok. Round 5 - No. NO. Chunking off yet another 10% scaling from his Q and some other junk I really don't care about at this point is too much. It seems to be a favorite at Riot to take 10% off Rengar's stats - If I recall correctly, they took 10% AS off his old EmpQ after taking 10% AD scaling off the same (and I think nonEmp as well), then 10% off the new Q in the early days. I might be getting this wrong, but I think E lost 10% at least once in its time. W heals were always a favorite for gutting as well, because
yknow
free
sustain
is
bad
.
Now let's talk about the specifics of lane Rengar.
Rework: Q autopushes waves unless used very sparingly
Hard to CS (Animations are just awful)
E feels clunky
Hard to harass when I CANT CAST MY ROTATION WHILE JUMPING
Ult is, was, and always will be useless in lane
W is worthless for defence (Because we nerfed getting free resists right
*) and can't be used for sustain - you have to intentionally get damaged to heal for less that you lost (unless you have SV and used your hard-won ferocity that dies CONSTANTLY on a W rotation. Like we can use that ten year cooldown every time we need it. Riiiiight.)
Doesn't really do burst or sustained damage
Can't hold ferocity - can't actually outplay an opponent by selecting the PROPER COMBO (New rengar players might not have heard of this - a combo is something you plan, not mashing Q and W then idk throw an E for whatever)
Ex. Opponent goes in for wave that you manipulated close to bushes. Uses Xability on creeps - now is your time. You jump: Old: You have your ferocity and use EQQW to hold the opponent in place for a combo. You outplayed and outsmarted them. Good job. New: You jump. You press E. They dash out because its fiora i mean for gods sake everybody can escape. You leap (somehow using E) and hit QW. You use the ferocity on Q because you cant land E in creeps and W is useless. Congratulations they have free reign to harass you as you slink away. By the way, you're in the wave. You done goofed. Let's say that by some miracle you actually have four ferocity. At this point, you're forced into making hasty, rash, unconsidered decisions and you don't have time to outmanage your opponent. You. Lose.
*Hey I mean he's losing MR so all those AP champs that survive his burst... oh.
Jungar: Play any one of the myriad junglers more suited to whatever you think Rengar does well. I recommend Kha'zix for surprise and roaming (also dueling), Xin zhao for pushing and holy god its xin zhao you have no chance (be warned: you NEED a team to initiate lategame) or Shyvana: jump in and nuke 'em all then ACTUALLY GET OUT ALIVE after killing whatever you see. Any otehr jungler of your choice can fill this spot.
So there you have it. My in-depth explanation of the failings of new Rengar (If anybody actually wants to hear more I HAVE SO MUCH MORE). Now, I'm sure anyone who feels my pain can understand my desire to get back a tiny fraction of the time and effort I put into Rengar (in the form of a champion/skin-specific Refund).
