How to fix toxicity

I recently came back to league after quite a long break, and the one thing that has really stuck out to me is the amount of rage and toxic players in this game. All of the funnest matches I have played have been those with kind supportive team mates, regardless of of if I won or not. While some people may say I should just ignore it I say I shouldn't have to. The point of the game is to have fun, and when people rage, no one has fun, including the person who is raging. The next idea is to mute them, but that also stops any potential cooperation through chat with that team mate and is not a perfect solution. The best solution of course is to get rid of the ragers, which is of course easier said then done. The main tool to combat rage right now is the tribunal, however this system is highly ineffective for certain reasons, the main reason is that it does not deter raging effectively. The tribunal can't hope to ban every rager in the whole game and so if it can not deter rage, it will never fulfill it's goal.

The idea of the tribunal is that the threat of punishment will deter gamers from raging, this is simply not true for two reasons. The first is that people who rage often don't see themselves as ragers, they believe that they are acting rationally. This leads to the second reason, ragers are by definition filled with rage, and are therefore irrational at the time they are being toxic. This means that they cannot correctly process risk and punishment, meaning they simply aren't able to process what might result from their actions. In other words, it doesn't matter what threat of punishment you present to a rager, it won't deter them, and since ragers don't know they are ragers, you can't threaten them before this time. Ragers don't rage because they are pure evil, they rage because they can't perceive the downside, and there is no upside to NOT raging.
I mean seriously, riot gives NO good rewards to being nice in game let's look at what they have. -the honor system, which let's admit, is useless and offers no motivation at all -you win more if you are nice: probably true but psychologicaly that is more a possible of punishment of loss, which ragers can't process. -rewards for not being chat reported in a certain amount of time: this amounted to like 500 ip in a year, which is a joke.

  • there might be more but I honestly can't remember them so I doubt they are highly significant.

I mean, I'm sorry if I am getting salty, but it is honestly a little rediculous.

OK calm down time, back under control. While riot seems to recognize that positive reenforcement is a good idea, they really haven't done much with the idea. I think that to stop raging from being so common riot needs to offer serious positive rewards for good game play. They should create a reverse tribunal that goes through chat logs and awards players who are positive with ip boosts. They should offer monthly rewards to players who avoid being reported all month. They should offer skins exclusive to those who show good behavior, and do so regularly enough that people can come back from being reported to get those skins. They should have cool rewards for the honor system to make it actually worth while. They should add summoner icons exclusive to those with good behavior recently. I made up this list in 10 minutes and I'm sure some of it could be implemented, and I'm not saying ALL of it should be implemented these are just ideas.

In the case that this is read by riot, I think it would be fine with exclusive access to content (skins icons etc. you still have to pay for based upon good behavior, I know you guys aren't a charity, us buying riot points is how you guys buy food to live and stuff. Also love you guys, I do, I just think this needs a lititle changing. As an alternate Idea you could add a third currency in the game earned exclusively through weekly good behavior that can be used for certain icons skins etc. (Only certain skins not ALL of them again I know you guys gotta eat). Again much love, a concerned summoner.

If I have made any grammatical or spelling errors, feel free to point them out and I will fix them.

"The point of the game is too have fun"

no, the point of the game is to win

if you want to have fun, go play vs bots

if you play well, nobody is toxic to you, funny how that works out
