Ranked Matched Making

I went into a ranked game today. 2 team mates were unranked, 2 were bronze 5. I was bronze three after going 5-5 in provisionals after being silver 4 in season 5. Everyone on the enemy team was bronze 3. No one on my team seemed to know how to play their champion and went unreasonable summoner spells. So my question is, how does match making work and how can I make sure this doesnt happen again because it was such an unpleasant experince playing with people who have no idea what they are doing against people who were serious.
