Question Regarding League skin Mockups

I've been studying what kinds of skins other people in the community have managed to come up with and have recently discovered a love for mockups and am wondering how others manage to imitate the League art style so effectively. Is there some kind of name for this art style or a specific technique to making the characters fit in with the surroundings?
