How does match making work?

It finds the most incompetent scrubs and puts them on your team, then it puts the diamond smurfs on the enemy team. No matter what your teammates tell you, the diamond smurfs are always on the other team, not yours.

Jokes aside, the game tries to guess how good you are and puts you on a team such that it thinks it has two teams of comparable skill. That said, one side is slightly stacked, and the system expects them to win. If they do win, the game assumes it accurately knows everyone's skill. If it's the other team that wins, the system realized it underestimated/overestimated some players and adjusts how it matches them in future games.
