How does Poppy's shield work (More specific when you read)

When you hit somebody with the buckle the buckle pops out and lands on the ground. Is that like catching a Draven axe/Gnar boomerang? Or will it just choose a random place to fall on? I wanna know because it looks to be random because while I was walking one direction and I threw it, it landed way behind me.
