@Riot, What can we, the players, do about negative behavior?
I have recently played a game with two players who were consistently flaming each other saying they will get the roll because they are "Godsent ADCs". These two players had fine in-game attitudes, but there pregame behavior was sadly, all to common. Now I personally don't have an issue with arguing and bickering, but I tried to quench the fire with no relief; Player 1: bot with da fistful Restrict: Pref bans? I'd suggest morg/fizz/zed/gnar/kha. Player 1: i personally hate laning aginst luc Player 2: im going adc Restrict: I'll ban lucian Player 2: im trolling Restrict: Would you mind them please duoing bot? Player 2: every other f--ing adc Player 2: in this f---ing elo Player 2: is complete s--t Player 1: i mean we can probaly carry your f---ing ass Player 2: oh no Restrict: can we stop arguing please. Player 2: can you stfu Restrict: Just a suggestion if you truly do want to win. I know league can be stressful sometimes, but it doesn't mean we need to argue. Restrict: We all want to win, so lets do our best and play as a team. Player 2: gonna ever Player 2: trust another player Restrict: Well sometimes you need to trust your team. You cant play every position. Player 1: your stats on adc Player 1: arent that great Restrict: And monkey, badgering him isn't going to help aswell. Player 1: i dont like people Player 2: thats just s--t spewing out your mouth that they arent good Restrict: It's alright, there will be players who you dont like. I'm not asking you to like him, I'm asking you to be a team player and a team mate. Player 2: ya and when he feeds Player 2: im gonna get reported
Now here I'm trying to be a modeled player who is trying to get the team together and calmed down, but these players just don't understand that arguing is only going to enhance the problem. As a player, what is my position; Ignore it and try my best, live through the experience and act unscathed just to end with a report?
I've recently watched Lyte presentation on "Play Nice: the Science and Behavior of Online Games" (located here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbYQ0AVVBGU) And he says he wants to shield common good behaved players from toxicity. This is a problem. Understandably many game will have these types of players with no penalties and will continue to have them.
As Lyte states here, putting a ban on these player does not fix the problem. Therefor, Riot looked for alternative hands on approach of punishment instead of bans. These are the chat restrictions. Though chat restrictions are obviously effective, even though reducing the amount of communication from a player in-game, There is nothing to change or alter the attitude of the effective players.
In conclusion, I'd like to ask Riot behavioral team or staff, what am I as a player, suppose to do in this situation? I'd suggest using the community help riot fix it's problems, though we need the knowledge how to. As Edmund Burke once said , " The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
