How to ALWAYS get your preferred role in the new Champ Select

I was looking up when the new client launches (as i thought it did today) and found out it launches tomorrow. While i was there i decided to read the comments and noticed an overwhelming majority of the people are upset team builder is gone because they aren't garen-teed the role they want, instead they get a 50/50. This isn't necessarily true, there is a way to ALWAYS get the role you want.

Requirements: Que up with at least 1 friend

Choose your primary role, and have your duo choose theirs. Select each other's primary roles as your secondary roles. Using this method you will always get your preferred role, and if you don't you can swap with your pre-made to get it anyways. For example you want to play top and your duo wants to play jungle. Select top for primary role and jungle for secondary and have them select jungle for primary and top for secondary. The match is found and you got top, good! Or, the match is found and you got jungle, ask you friend to trade with you and you got top, good!

To clarify: i am not on PBE, i haven't tested this theory. I just assume it works, why wouldn't it?

EDIT: idea posted above won't work. Keeping thread up so others can with the same idea can see the results. Thanks to shaowsaotome for the info straight from pbe! On the bright side supports and junglers may be getting more popular soon

Requiring two positions ensures short queue times and that no one on your team gets stuck in a position they don't want to play. We know some options (cough support and jungle) aren't always quite as popular, and plan to incentivize these roles with IP bonuses if necessary.

To clarify: i am not on PBE, i haven't tested this theory. I just assume it works, why wouldn't it?

If I recall correctly, they made it so your party needed to have (number of party members) + 1 roles selected to avoid just what you're talking about. So it would let you queue up if you just have 2 people and 2 roles selected.

that just seems dumb to me, why remove team builder and also deny people the only work-around to actually get the role they want? I'm personally indifferent i can play anywhere, but still...

There are two other work arounds:

  • Play with 5 people and agree before hand what role to play
  • Ask if you can trade in lobby

Riot has made it sound like the vast majority of the time you will get your primary role. And honestly? How many people only get enjoyment playing one role?

getting 5 people at the same time (of around the same rank if playing ranked) is difficult :/ and asking to trade in lobby I'm sure will be about as effective if i tried that now with pick order, people won't trade you if they got what they want already. Do you KNOW if my suggested work-around would not work?

Getting 5 is difficult, I'll give you that, but keep in mind what we're talking about here. We're talking about guaranteeing that you get a role. 100% chance of getting the role as oppose to a 90% chance or whatever it ends up being. If you're only on your fallback role one out of every 10 games, is it really that bad?

It's not about only enjoying one role, it's about the fact that you never have a real option (sort of) to play the role you want MOST.

When you had the option to play the role you wanted to play most, it came at the cost of not being able to pick the champion best suited for the team. It's a trade, guaranteed role with fixed champion for high probability of role and flexible champion.

See, it's funny because my wife and I come at it from the opposite perspective. I main Mid, and fall back to ADC/Fill, while she mains Support, and falls back to ADC/Fill. We don't have to keep tabs on each others lanes as closely, because we'll simply tell each other how the other lane is going. This artificially increases our map awareness (even more so when our Jungle main friend is playing too). I can trust that the Bot lane is in capable hands, and she can trust that Mid lane is in capable hands, rather than putting all our eggs in one basket. Don't get me wrong, we've had games with some amazing synergy in lane when I've been ADC and she's been Support, but it's usually better when we're not in the same lane.

I actually main top, while she mains support. I like going adc with her though, as we synergize well, but im just so shitty at adc. If we played ranked we would both take our primary roles and co-ordinate top and support synced mid lane ganks for maximum disrespect xD good luck this season bro!

Riot has already stated that if you're a duo queuing up in the new champ select, between the two of you there have to be three unique roles selected. I've tested this for myself in the pbe. Your idea won't work.

Thank you, i'm glad someone from the actual pbe was able to confirm or deny my theory. Although i think it's dumb they did it like that, it's still good to have the real facts.

You can still talk amongst your team during the champ select if you want to trade roles, and if your team is ok with it, there's nothing stopping you from going to a role different than the one you ended up with. I've gotta say, new champ select is gonna be awesome, especially for ranked play. That's just my opinion, but I really feel like once people have had a chance to use it for themselves, everyone will see how good it is.

I agree, i'm going to start actually playing ranked this season just because of this update, very excited! I'm fine playing fill, the post was more directed to the people i saw complaining that team builder was gone, i thought i had a witty solution for them but i guess not xD good luck this season and thanks again for the info!

It's for one day, I'm sure everything will be fine. I think this new champ select and the extra promo win along with the state of the game will make it much easier to climb

not sure what you meant by that, addressing the rest of what you said though i agree. For ranked the new draft mode will be MUCH better. However not everyone cares about ranked, and team builder was a fine game mode tat didn't NEED to be discarded for this to take it's place. They could have just had both

i agree people could use more diversity in what they play. This is why i enjoy aram so much! My post was more directed towards others (not myself) that want a specific role

Oh my bad I misread then. They should randomized the roles based on top three choices because it's kinda hard to find supports in lower Elo. Most people wanna be a hero and play carry roles.

Your in bronze that's why hate to break it to you

You don't deserve higher Elo if you can't accept the fact you can't always carry the game by playing one role Games don't go as smoothly everytime to play specific role It doesn't matter who supports you can always carry the game as adc

A. This thread isn't about rank, or the ranked queue B. I never claimed i deserved higher elo, honestly i couldn't care less C. I play fill, this thread is to inform people who don't want to play fill. D. I (or anyone) can carry a game from any position, not just ad "carry"

Lastly, I'm bronze because i want to be. I played 28 ranked games with personal friends of mine that just got level 30 because i thought it would be fun to play ranked together, it wasn't. Still, 50% win rate isn't terrible. Never had the desire to climb, if i wanted to i would. I've been playing since season 2 when 2 top was a viable strategy and people had to type out "mia" and "re" because there wasn't fancy pings and team builder didn't even release yet. Don't try to condescend me because you think your prestigious elo means something, because it doesn't, you just come off as a douche.
