Hi, let me start off by saying I am in no way a noob to the game; I have been playing since season 2... That being said, I've also been bronze since season 2. In the beginning I didn't know the game well enough to make it out of bronze, and thereafter never had the desire to play ranked at all. At some point each season I'll play promos (usually with IRL friends who aren't good), get placed bronze, then play normals.

But THIS is season 6 baby

So this thread is going to be about helping me (and any other readers) understand ranked better from all you prestigious high ELO players :)

To begin, I don't even understand promotionals past the bitching I have read on the boards. It's my understanding that in promos you can get matched against anyone to get a basic understanding of your skills and get placed into a rank accordingly... so It's a mixed bag you could be against someone who just got level 30 or against Faker himself, Right? How do you know when you're in your promos? How many games are in promos? How many games are between promos? How do you know if promos were a success or a failure? Are promos based on team performance and winning or individual KDA and other single-person statistics? Is it possible to check opponents rank to know if you got stomped because it was Bronze vs Diamond? Can you even get placed like that?

Next question is LP. I assume LP is your "ranked points?" If you win you gain LP, and if you lose you lose LP, correct? Is LP only influenced during promotionals? Does LP ever decay (say if you haven't played ranked in a while)? Do you lose bonus LP for dodging/afk? What does LP stand for/mean? Can you get demoted from losing LP even if you aren't in promos?

Naturally, MMR is next. I don't know what MMR is. According to na.op.gg i have 75 LP with 13 ranked wins and 15 ranked losses, and MMR check says "MMR can be known better if played rank in solo que" so i guess i have 0 MMR. How much LP/MMR is needed for each rank? (i.e obviously 75LP is bronze, when do you get silver? Gold? etc.)

ELO is next. Good'ol ELO hell right? Everyone stuck in Bronze when they deserve Diamond. It's my understanding league used to work on an ELO system, but now uses MMR... However, I always hear about ELO hell and MMR boosting so which one is it? What's the difference? What does ELO/MMR stand for/mean? Is your rank based on ELO, MMR, LP, or a combination of those? Does your ELO/MMR/LP effect the people you get placed against OUTSIDE of ranked?

TL;DR: I guess I'm asking someone to explain the whole ranked system from the ground up. Keep in mind I want information pertaining to season 6, if it used to be one way but is going to change soon, please try not to confuse me and just tell me how it will be.

P.S. If anyone is wondering why play since season 2 and just now start ranked it's because of the new draft pick launching with the new client. I don't want to worry about pick order and have to play my very worst role because the game randomly decided i was last pick. I don't want to join a game and say "please don't ban Fizz" just for the asshole with all the bans to decide to ban him first just to make me salty. I want to be able to play the champion and role I want (more or less) and have a say in the banning process too. The new ranked system looks A LOT better, and I for one am anxious to dive in and see how i fare. So, any advice on LP, MMR, ELO, how to climb, good bans, counter-picking, Promotionals, and any other ranked advice IS VERY HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!

Well, my ranked history is pretty limited. As soon as I hit 30 I ran straight into ranked and got SV, and then dropped to B4 in no time. Then I stopped for the rest of the season. Over that time, I became quite the adept Lee Sin main, and as soon as the new season hit, I thought "dang, I might do really well." So I hopped into my 10 games to decide where I would be placed. Saying I did well is a bit of an understatement. I won 8/10 games and I was ready to see that Silver logo flash; but it didn't. I got demoted instead. So I found someone I could play bot with very well, and we climbed ourselves up to the top of Bronze 4 in a matter of a couple days. For a couple reasons, I stopped playing ranked; none being league related, I was just busy.

But enough about me, let's talk Promos. Promos are not the first 10 games you play. those are preliminaries. You are placed with teams according to your play in classic (I think). depending on how you do, you'll be placed in a rank

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you know how ranks work, but just in case, I'll tell you. There are 7 main ranks, and within each main rank (excluding Master and Challenger,) there are 5 sub-ranks Bronze Silver Gold Platinum Diamond Master Challenger

The subranks work like this; 5 is the worst, 1 is the best For example, Bronze 5 is the absolute worst, whereas Gold 2 is pretty dang good so from worst to best, it's Bronze 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Silver 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 so on and so forth

Now you get a promo when you hit 100LP in your rank and you're ready to move up a promo is a set of 2/3 (or 3/5? not exactly sure) games that pair you with slightly more skilled opponents to test your ability. If you win, you move up! if you lose, you stay and lose 25 LP.

Next; ELO and MMR. I'm fairly certain MMR applies to both Ranked and Normals, and ELO is only Ranked. Either way, it doesn't matter. Everyone uses ELO as an excuse rather than a challenge. It doesn't matter much

Next up is counter-picks. in bronze, it doesn't matter really. Unless it's the hardest counter ever and you can play them well, go ahead. If you can't play them well, don't. even. think about it. Their experience will overcome your counter. If you can avoid someone countering you, do it. as long as it doesn't affect your play in any way.

I might as well tell you about ELO Hell; it's a farce. Every wannabe Silver has blamed ELO Hell, or their teammates. So here's a tip. ALWAYS blame yourself. If you were even on that half of the map, blame yourself. It completely stops you from flaming your innocent team friends and allows you to improve on what you need to without getting upset or angry. If you deserve to climb, you will climb. It just takes longer in Bronze.

Lastly, communication is key. Leadership is also key. however 2 people can't call the shots. Always be willing to compromise with teammates and ALWAYS be friendly

That's all. Any more questions?

  1. Promos don't put you vs "just anyone" usually they are close to your elo. You can check there elo with lolskill or lolnexus usually. So if you are bronze 1 promoing to silver 5 you will generally face a high of silver 3 to a low of bronze 3. Promos is 2/3 wins for going up a tier (bronze 2 to 1) and 3/5 wins to promote a division (bronze to silver) The games between promos is determined by your LP gain/loss and how many wins/loss you get accordingly. You need 100LP to go to promos.

  2. You gain LP for winning and lose LP for losing yes. LP means "League Points" LP is not influenced during promos but can go up and down during it, say you lsoe the first game but win the second you may lose say 15 the first game and gain 16 so your back at 100lp but your still in promos (promos dont end till you lose 2 or win 2 or lose 3 win 3 depending on which) but then you lsoe the next game. and lose another 15. so now you are siting at 85LP instead of sitting at 70 if you lost 2 in a row and both at 15 lp. You lose 3 LP for first dodge and this can go up to a large amount for the second offense sometimes. when you AFK you get a normal lp loss as if you lost the game cause well you afked in game and your team lost and if your team won you STILL lose what LP you'd lose if you guys lost.

3.Your MMR isn't "0" it is a hidden number. it is "Match Making Rating"

4.ELO is pretty much MMR. ELO is your rank, MMR is match Making Rating
