Need help on improving computer performance

So I'm curious what you guys think I can do or will need to upgrade to improve my general computer performance. I'm currently getting 50-60 FPS with my graphics settings on very low, when I put the environment settings to very high it drops to 40-50 FPS which for me isn't a big deal. I'm curious though what you guys can suggest for me to do to upgrade my computer or tweak my settings to further increase my performance. What I am hoping to get are software setting tweaks, and/or a hardware upgrade that would benefit me the most.

My computer specs are : Windows 7 x 64 2.2 ghz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core processor 6 GB ram Nvidia GeForce 8400GS GeForce6100 PM-M2 2.0 Motherboard

Any thoughts and help would greatly appreciated

Strange, 50-60 FPS on low then you say 40-50 on high. Strange part is you are only dropping 10 fps going to high. For my computer, I get 60 Capped FPS then on low setting I get about 120. Some things that help resolution is capping your frames can make it more smooth/stable. Fixing the resolution in which you play. Borderless/Windowed/Full-Screen. You have Nvidia which is great, they have "NVidia experience" which can help set your setting up for you. Also Razor Game boost is popular. Honestly Google is your friend, but if you are getting 50 fps I would just stick with that. You aren't missing out on anything other then particles and shadows on higher graphics.

Well, all i change is the environment so the game doesn't look like shit. Everything else is still on very low. My gameplay is play able for sure, but i was just curious what people thought I could do to upgrade my machine to boost the performance because I do like playing my game with a good FPS and have it look pretty. Because I can play with a good FPS but it looks like graphics from the early 2000's all fuzzy wuzzy :p

Imagine having a toaster like me and living off of 18-25 fps per game on the lowest setting. Then go to sleep. When you wake up, your computer will look like brand new and you will hug it and pray to Bill Gates about how thankful you are that you have a decent computer.

I'm thankful that I have a decent computer for my nephew( i'm posting this to hopefully get some ideas to upgrade his computer). But I'm still curious if anyone has any suggestions.

@TheMormonator I do love that name. And it makes me very happy I can get my FPS snce I used to play at a steady 20 before and it sucked....
