Gaming Mouse Recommendations?

So I've been using a stock wired, optical, 3 button+wheel, usb mouse that came with an old computer of mine, and I've been looking for another one to replace it. It's still working fine, but I've had it for several years and have used it for gaming quite a bit; I'd rather have a replacement take over and use this one as a back-up (the mouse also holds a bit of sentimentality to me, I'd rather not break it playing LoL).

Anyone have any recommendations on a good mouse? My preferences are those listed above, pretty standard. I'm not exactly looking for a high end gaming mouse, more one that's fairly small, inexpensive, and functional, preferably wired, optical, with three mouse buttons (for other games). Also wondering about your opinion of having extra mouse buttons (what do you use them for?)

EDIT: The mouse I currently use is about 3 inches in length (it was made for a netbook, meant to be portable). I rather like the form factor of smaller mice; I feel like I have better control being able to manipulate it with my finger tips rather than having to move my whole hand. If anyone knows of a similar mouse, I would be much obliged if you provided a name or link. Thanks!

I don't have any recommendations for a small inexpensive mouse, as I use the Razer Naga (and previously the Razer Deathadder), both of which are on the expensive side. But I can tell you that I absolutely LOVE the extra buttons on my Naga. It has a 12 button keypad on the left side at your thumb, though I only use 9 of them regularly in game because my thumb is short. However, they make using item actives SO much easier! I also have Alt and Ctrl bound to two of those buttons respectively, which I use for leveling up skills and normal casting the few spells I prefer not to smart cast. TLDR: Extra mouse buttons have definitely been worth the extra bucks for me.

What in Kayle's name do you use 12 extra buttons for? I could probably think of a use for two at most, beyond that I don't know what to do. I'll look into getting some extra buttons though, thanks for the help!

If you like smaller mice I'm probably going to have to have to hold most of my specific recommendations, but as far as brand I would say look at Logitech. They've been pretty good for me, and pretty long-lasting on all fronts.

As far as extra buttons, get 2 extra at the very least if you play league. I've assigned quick-ping and quick-retreatping to my extra buttons an have not once regretted the decision. It also allows for nigh instant access to the rest of the smart pings as well.

Any reason you want to stick to optical? I find laser easier to work with (but naturally runs the mouse a bit more pricey).

Try looking at the Logitech G300 gaming mouse, it's the one I currently use and have been for over a year now.

I'd like to hear your specific recommendations, it might help me gain some direction (also I don't know how well extra buttons do with a small mouse, since I'm using my thumb a lot to manipulate the mouse). I figured an extra button for pings would be great, I usually hit G to bring up the ping icon, but I'm and F flash user so this has occasionally resulted in problems, lol.

I mostly meant optical as oppose to mechanical, lol. I don't really need a super high precision mouse; like I said, I'm using a stock mouse that came with a netbook I bought a long time ago. If I can grab a laser mouse for <$20 or so, that' be awesome, if not, I can do without; I'm not looking for some professional gaming mouse, though experimenting with some upgraded functionality might be worthwhile.

Also do you recommend getting a mousepad? I haven't used a mousepad since I had one of those old, fabric ones; do they sell harder/smoother textured mousepads now? I rather use a mouse on a desk surface than one of those old mousepads, lol.

For an optical, yes, very much. Most don't have a problem with anything except a reflective surface, but optical is vulnerable to dirty tables and what not. Lasers not so much, but it's always easier on your hand of you're on a desktop.

The razer Naga is also really good, it makes sure the extra cost isn't wasted, but all of the above should be fairly easy on your wallet and effective.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately I forgot to mention I'm on a Mac...lol, these mice don't have listed that they're compatible with OSX. Does give me some good guidance when making a selection though, so thanks!

As a side note, do you find lights and what not in a mouse distracting? I keep looking for gaming mice but all of them glow in the dark, I'm kind of just looking for a no-frills kind of mouse, lol.

Yeah can't say I know what's up with Macs, but usually there are mouse drivers that are compatible with both.

Lights are fun to mess around with, and completely unescessary, but are by no means distracting. usually your hands are covering most of them, and none of it should be directed upwards (into your face) so even pitch black midnight gaming is fine. Monitor backlights almost always dwarf any colored LED's any peripherals can put out.

usually you can, but the problem you might run into is if the button is programmable or not. If the button has a built-in function (usually being increasing/decreasing DPI) then if you hit it it'll do the function you assigned in-game and the built-in function at the same time. If it's programmable you can change that, if not then it'll be a hassle.

hm...alright. I'm having difficulty finding a mouse with extra buttons that might actually be recognized by Mac OSX, lol. Day by day I am constantly reminded that Macs are not gaming computers, lol

Actually, one other question; did it take you long to get accustomed to a new mouse? From the looks of things, I'm going to have to get used to a larger mouse, as well as the thumb buttons, part of me feels like it might take longer to adjust than I would like, part of me thinks it's no big deal (it only took me a game or two to get used to smartcasting after a year of not smartcasting, for example)

It'll be real easy no worries. The biggest change is higher DPI, makes your movements a lot more sensitive, but luckily it comes very naturally. I give it maybe 3 games before you're playing as good or better than what you were.
