Riot PR staff seemed to have skipped a few lessons

I guess they skimped when they hired their PR people. First rule of crisis communications: Get something out there. Even just an official, pinned, "we are aware and are working on it". Really not a ton to ask. Crappy communication is crappy.

"Network Operations – 7:54 PM We're aware of a problem causing games to crash during or immediately after loading, and are working on a fix."

And this is new to you? I don't know how long you've been playing LoL for, but Riot has never been known to actually keep their playerbase informed. Even when a situation is discovered and on the off chance they post something and give a time for next update, you never hear back. This is something you should come to expect.
