Gangplank Q (Pre-nerf) Question

Was reading patch notes today and saw that Gangplank's Q pre-nerf scaled 4/5/7/6/8 in terms of gold given back when killing a target with the q or a barrel last hit by q. Why did the ability give more rank 3 than rank 4??
