Thoughts on lore changes and the last 15 champions
-
The Shadow Isles update, Twisted Treeline is given two altars with ghosts that say cryptic messages. The best context we are given for these characters is a vague block of text on reddit. Also references unspeakable terror spider god that is not confirmed to be Vilemaw until a forum post when Lissandra is revealed half a year later. -
Adds context for the Kinkou and gives them an opposing concept. Okay. -
Is looking for a landwaker bearing a moonstone (possibly Diana, but nobody's saying anything) so the Marai can hold off unspeakable terrors(we needed more of them) -
Adds context to Caitlin while being a solid character on her own. Okay. -
Unspeakable terror as a champion will later provide context for Lucian . Okay. -
Lore is presented as a set of images on facebook. Is also implied to have some connection to Talon. -
Lore is presented as a set of images on forums. Elaborates on Zuan providing context to all related champions. -
The Freljord update. A lot of lore is placed in the audio of the Howling Abyss. You can hear it by standing in the shops. In a game where you very much don't want to stand in the shops. This lore is primarily about unspeakable terrors(take a shot) the watchers.
We also learn Vi has a sister and there may be a relationship between Ezreal and Lux.
Champion lore is rewritten. Most notably Trundle, Runaan explains on the forums that this is so his story can progress.
Freljord tribes are provided context through forum posts from Quinn's perspective.

One year later and I still don't know what a Darkin is. Lore is provided as a series of forum posts through Ezreal's perspective.
Ezreal and Lux relationship referenced again. -
is provided context by Thresh. Okay. -
provides development for Vi. So much so she arguably has no lore of her own. Lots of personality, but came to Piltover for reasons unknown. Wants to annoy Vi for reasons unconfirmed (possibly the sister but nobody is saying anything). And is presumably still terrorizing Piltover, because if she was caught/stopped we were never told. -
lore is provided as a promotional page. Directs motivations at an unknown assassin(implied to be Riven, but nobody is saying anything) -
A member of the original unspeakable terrors(you still have to take a shot). May be connected to the watchers, but nobody is saying anything. -
A prehistoric proto-yordle. Who was encased in true ice by something and released by something else(rioter on LA says Anivia, but makes sure everything remains vague by saying it was to fight something else).
Look, I understand that the Institute of War forced a status quo and made the champions themselves less relevant in the story, but you have to understand that the league judgments gave the champions a minimum amount that we had to know before they could be released("Why do you want to join the league?" and "How does it feel exposing your mind?"). You also have to understand that we have spent the last 2 years getting less confident that you will fulfill that minimum in a reliable way. We don't want to have to sort through forum posts and social media and we don't want to wait more than a year to find out what a champion is.
TL;DR Forgive my skepticism about the lore.
Edit: Forgot one, feel like an idiot. here it is.
A solid introduction leaving questions about a mysterious vault. Arguably as complete as Trundle's lore used to be. Still okay.
