Is there a limit to how many chests you can earn per season?

I know it's 1 per champ per season, but is there a limit on total number per season?

The limit is actually lower than the champion pool. You can only generate one chest every week, so the max is 48, though there might be variation for this season because it wasn't available at the very start.
