East Coast Ping is not much better than all the way from Hong Kong?

I am from Hong Kong and my ping to NA server is around 140 to 160. I read posts about East Coast to NA server in West Coast and it is around 80-120 in general. It takes around 12 hours flight from Hong Kong to West Coast, while it takes around 3 hours flight from East Coast to West Coast. Then the ping from East to West Coast should be just like 40.

... It varies, but east coast ping is about 85-160. Mine is usually 120.

I'm not entirely sure how a packet gets from Hong Kong to California, but I would imagine that there would be very few hops for the routers to switch your packets across, so even if it's a longer distance, there is less time spent transferring the packet across different intermediate networks. Think driving on the interstate versus driving through a town.

But hey, I don't know a lot about the infrastructure of the net so this is just my best guess.

I get 75-80 out of Michigan consistently. Really though League isn't super frame sensitive like a fighting game where 1/6th of a second difference is losing you critical readability. And that's only compared to 160-170 ping verse 0, which no one is actually playing at. It's mostly people looking for a scapegoat.

It's certainly not a problem worth dividing the player base over.

The reason for this is that distance isn't as big of a factor as people like to think. Internet data travels fast. The problem isn't the location of the server, but the number of carrier changes between East and West Coast.

Good to know about Hong Kong. My Bangladesh ping is rarely below 300 and closer to 400. Time to move!

Who cares now, if you play league of legends in Hong Kong, pings are now over 220.

Ok. The ping time applies in both directions. If you're at 120 ping, that's almost a 1/4 second delay before factoring in any human reaction time.

For a bronze level player, that won't make much of a difference. For higher level players where timing is critical a 1/4 second is the difference between winning a team fight and losing a team fight. It's the difference between landing a skillshot or missing a skillshot. It's the difference between executing a dragon smite steal or feeding the enemy team a free kill.

And this isn't even getting into the random lag spikes and lost connections caused from having oversubscribed servers.

If this wasn't such a big deal, then we'd see Riot holding championship matches all over the place without needing a LAN setup. It would be "fair" no matter where you physically were. But that isn't the case. Not by a long shot.

West Coast ping isn't 0. Its about 60-80 for me. That means it increased 20-40 on the East Coast. Next, its a 6 hour flight across the US, not 3. You'd expect a 40-80 increase to Hong Kong which is about what you said you get.

120-140 most days, sometimes it's around 100-110 if i'm lucky. nyc here

i've stopped playing any champ that takes skill to play. only rammus, udyr, mundo, and skarner for me

Yeah it seems odd. Some people do get really bad ping in the East Coast.

I do not have "terrible" ping but it could be better. Perhaps it's just the infrastructure of the internet in the US just being bad.

Well Hong Kong ping to Europe is really bad, may be because almost no one cares internet to Europe so the ISP in Hong Kong doesn't seriously build network stuff to speed up to Europe. Ping is over 200 to 300 something so I don't play EWU or EUNE.

North Carolina player here, I tend to have around a 100-130ms ping when I play on the NA servers and ~100 the few times I've played on the EUW servers.
