The trick is to get the most out of it that you can. You generally put it where it is of use but either the enemy likely won't see it for a while (or ever) or it's too risky for them to go kill.

Yeah, like some folks have already said, the trick is to put them in a place where your team can defend them. They're about zone control, keeping an area of the map free of enemy vision for as long as you can defend it. It has use over sweeper because of sweeper's impermanence.
