XY are both good introductions to the Generation 6 mechanics and naturally leads into Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire which developed those mechanics a bit further.
If you don't mind backtracking to a previous gen, Black/White is a fantastic generation, my personal favorite to date.

Legacy Hydralpha1 votesIf you want to get into the new games, go with X or Y. As for getting into the older games; try playing Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum. They have Pokemon contests like Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald before them and they have a great storyline. It may just be blatant favouritism because I started with that generation, but I recommend it.

Protoform X1 votesIf you're willing to go back in time a bit, HeartGold/SoulSilver are as good as any other game before or after. If you pick up anything for the 3DS before that you might not like the inferior graphics as much, but the 3DS titles are all amazing too.

bulldoggamer1 votesIt's alright there are plenty of games in the steam. But imma have to disagree with you and say Emerald was the worst pokemon just because of the insane difficulty spike. It's still a good game just a step below the rest.

bulldoggamer1 votesI'm saying from a game design prospective it was a very sudden jump in difficulty. It almost forces you to use a legendary and just brute force your way through everything or just spends hours grinding to make up for the level difference. Difficulty isn't a problem but when you go from casually easy to relatively challenging it really sours the game play experience.
The Deckowner1 votesCasually to me basically means use cheat for levels and stuff, because repeating the same procedure a billion times in 5 different generation of pokemon is definitely not fun.
bulldoggamer1 votesCasual by definition is "relaxed and unconcerned" so something that doesn't take a whole lot of effort. It goes from like a 3/10 difficulty to a 7/10 just out of the blue.
