Overwatch closing in on League of Legends for most played game in Korean PC Bangs

League of Legends is losing its battle against newcomers such as Overwatch. In Koreas Pc Bang Ranking, LoL has dropped to bellow 30% shares, which is the lowest since Feb 2013. Overwatch has closed the gap to 6% and its looking to take the first spot. Many are stopping to play League of Legends, due to massive changes to a gameplay, to coming of dynamic q and autofill. Is this the beginning of the end?

1: "Korean PC bangs are not representative of the world population." Korea (namely South Korea) has a relatively tiny population, but I believe some of the highest per-capita of PC gamers compared to everywhere else. It's still not indicative of the grand scheme of things.

2: Just because League is no longer the first (which they still are) doesn't mean it's a death sentence.

3: Much like the enemy getting first blood or a new champion coming out and being declared overpowered immediately, you, like so many other people on the forums, aren't waiting for the dust to settle. People flocked to Overwatch because it's new at the moment and just like League EVERYONE LIKES TO TRY THE NEW SHIT. Even after the bleed back occurs and people decide which they like more (which by the way, you CAN play more than one game), that's still not the death sentence of League people want.

4: This just means League's overwhelming popularity streak has fallen below 30% (in just South Korea, mind you!), much like someone finally killing that fucking 20/0 Zed.

5: I'm starting to think that the League community is secretly a suicide cult at this point, given how eager and giddy everyone gets talking about League's inevitable death and hoping it'll happen next week, along with the general soul-crushing defeatism that lurks in the average mind.

I have the distinct impression the same thing was said when:

  • Strife
  • SMITE
  • Heroes of the Storm
  • Every other MOBA that got global marketing since Season 1;

has been dubbed a League of Legends killer.

Yet here we are.

Well since Riot wont listen to its community/fanbase, yea it could very well be. I've thought for about the past year that League is starting to go down-hill in popularity b\c of Riot's bad choices and decision making. Now with the pro scene and popular streamers refusing to play dynamic Q, its only compounded on itself. Riot thinks they know best and will never admit fault. We've seen this time and time again with popular games....the games developers get an inflated ego and refuse to listen to the fanbase about what they want/don't want. The community has been insanely vocal about Riots bad decisions lately, and yet they continue to ignore us. It'll only go on for so long until ppl get sick of it and leave. Sadly, the game we all loved so much is starting to become something we dont love nearly as much anymore....99% thx to Riot.

Game are too different ... you should compare Overwatch with TF and lol with Heroes of the Storm. BTW blizz is blizz .... there is a reason if WOW ( old, overabused and boring ) it's still going

Good for them. It's not a MOBA. It doesn't play similar to a MOBA, and it's not a competitor to the MOBA scene. They are two entirely different games that cater to two entirely different game genres. I personally do not like FPS like CSGO, Halo or anything like that, so I will literally NEVER gain an interest in Overwatch, no matter how much Tumblr posts ships and comics about it. They can't reach me because they aren't trying to grasp at me, and I am not the only one they will never grasp at.

And you want us to play overwatch with you?

WoW made a mistake with Cataclysm. Did they completely disappear? No, they still hold a steady 12 million subscribers. Sure, it is about 1/7 of League's community, but they still are going strong.

This post wasn't to glorify overwatch or any other game. This is just for the sake of concern. Moreover, statistics were from Riot/eSports employee from twitter and from reddit. Now, this doesn't mean its the end of LoL of course, but sure is worrying if your game is on top for so long, to drop so fast now. Over a past few months it didn't drop couple of %, it dropped over 15-20 %. Korea is known for gaming and everything there related to games, does affect every other region. Don't deny you don't feel like game is losing its magic.
