My advice is to build defensively against your opponent in lane first. Vs AP? Build visage. AD? Sunfire.

You're correct, but you need to be good at angling those minions right.

His E is great in match ups he can't win up front. His Q is great for those where he can survive 1v1.

I'd recommend you try to experiment you experiment with which abilities of his you like the most.

Other tips: farm is important to Sion. That health builds up. Your passive is great for a revenge kill early, but you're probably going to get outrun if you try to do that every time. Minions and objectives are better targets for your passive. Don't try to fully charge your Q all the time. You can get a knock up at half charge. Your Q is a great zoning tool for melee champions. Hover it over some of your low health minions to discourage them last hitting if you can.

I usually max W second for durability (I use it a lot in fights) and max whichever ability I'm using the most first (E or Q).

If you do an E build, then you don't need to put many points in your Q since you'll only use it for slows or knock ups, which (the knock ups anyway) don't increase in rank.
