They might not understand themselves. This comes from the inability to conceptualize beyond the social normality of their construct. However, they do understand they interaction between themselves enough to say that they do indeed understand women, they just couldn't phrase how or why.

When you get more into the study of women, you recognize that not all women are the same, in fact there's about 16 variabilities that all women will fall into. 16 compared to the 3 that men will typically fall into. Beyond this is more descriptive and characterizing traits.

You can see this divide between women more clearly when you get to Feminism and Women's Feminist Studies in college. Despite men having this view that feminism is bad, actually, feminism has no true definition in itself because it has been split, several different times, to mean different things. Men can view this and say that Feminism is a fail, and women are just indecisive. Rather, women who are typically dumped into a category separate from men (because men are simple enough to be one giant category) actually have not a lot in common in terms of views. Think of White Feminism, and 3rd Wave Feminism, and 2nd Wave Feminism, WoC feminism, and the other several views that exist. They all have Feminism, but they don't actually stand for the same thing. So women themselves do not agree on feminism, however, as a general acceptance of the term feminism we say it means Women = Men and it needs to be arbitrated somehow to enforce that idea. I however, don't view women as equals to men. They are different, but not too different to say that in a blurred sense they are equal. I believe that certain things that would be arbitrated for women = men means than women are inferior to men in some design.

Quite honestly, I try hard to understand not just women, but people in general. I refuse to take women's studies because I would hate to be frowned upon for having my view of women inside a class that probably shares the opposite. But studying human psychology has given me some kind of perception into people's minds. I read a bit of feminist propaganda, and various novels/essays/sholarly articles as well, and I can tell you that there's so much subject matter available that it seems ridiculous to say that it primarily focuses on women. A little bit of knowledge helps when you need it.
