Except that letter combinations make sounds based on their location in words and surrounding letters.

They also make different sounds based on arbitrary rules or outdated rules and backgrounds. "Women" being pronounced with a short i sound is due in part to the Old English "Wifmon" and through corruption of that we come to "Women" with its short i sound. Similar to how "Colonel" makes absolutely no sense by any phonetic rules in English because it's derived from the corruption of a French word.

When I point out the Ghoti thing I always use the words Rough Women and Station

so that when I write it out on a board it makes everyone extra confused.

It's always funny when someone comes in, looks at the board, and then goes, "Where?"
