I'm one of those Luigi players... One of my BEST Super Smash Brothers characters honestly. Along side of few of the more wacky or possibly "unwieldy" characters.

I got the newest SSB game for Wii U/3DS and I am still amazed at how much stronger he is when compared to Mario when played around his strengths and weaknesses. Mario can go jump off a REALLY tall cliff for all I care... But that's just me. XD Mario gets to much limelight and Luigi just gets left in the dust. I remember first unlocking Luigi back on N64. After using him for some time I ended just getting really good at knowing when to use his Specials and hit like a truck with them. So rewarding hearing that sweet "KREEEEEENG" sound effect on hitting the sweet-spot though for his Super Jump Punch making it a Fire Jump Punch instead.

I remember playing one of the older Mario games on 2 player mode... AND promptly getting Mario down to 1 extra life because I gave them all to Luigi and then dying on a stage so I can always play Luigi... Yeah I actually did that.

I have gotten this so hard. And I admittedly take some pleasure in that they later turn out to be discovered as "overbearing" and typically nerfed.

Examples? I've been trolled hard, sometimes even dodged outright, for picking Bard , Taric , and Rammus . Now, the obvious reason is because these people who troll me are completely not in touch with reality, but it's also because they're frankly just used to seeing Thresh every game. I acknowledge that as a legitimate reason.
