Well there's the champion named Singed, and singed also means to burn lightly. Since Brand is a fire ~~type pokemon~~ mage to leave a champion "singed" would mean to do very little damage to them, and in this scenario it's assuming Singed is very tanky and therefore is only "singed" by Brand's spells.
