If his tail had already been cut off, then yes he certainly would in order to reuse the nutrients of his own flesh for the most efficient consumption of matter.
If your talking about biting his own tail off to eat it, then I doubt he would, that's painful and actually has a negative impact over leaving it be.
Did they eat their own tails in Monster Hunter Tri? I don't see to recall ever seeing it.
