How to design your own CertainlyT champion 101, THE POST!

Hello ladies and gentleman, fellow appache helicopters and Volibear mains!

I wholeheartedly welcome you to the first ever course on how to design a CertainlyT champion! Before we start I would like to remind you that any consumption of drinks or snacks are prohibited during the show, including tide pods, I thank you very much for your understanding!

Now let's get right into it shall we? And since I have a good mood today, I will also be designing a champion along side with you to have the best learning experience on the whole boards!

First before actually thinking of any abilities you have to make some hard decisions. For example you have to not only decide what role your champion should cover from the beginning but also what his design is. Keep in mind that it is a huge commitment in champion ability design to first chose the champion aesthetics. While doing so you have to absolutely consider that even the champion aesthetics and the abilitiy design yet to be born from it are not only fun to play as but also against.

Luckily we are designing a CertainlyT champion so you can completely ignore all above mentioned points and get right into the fun part! Wooohoo!

The passive: Now here is what other champion designers do wrong when it comes to CertainlyT champions, they try to make the passive have an impact on the rest of the kit and therefore design this ability right of the bat. We are going to skip the passive for now and I will tell you why later on!

The Q spell: Ahh the bread and butter of any CertainlyT champion! With bread and butter I of course mean that you have to give your opponent the feeling that this ability somehow has a lower cooldown than Karthus Q while being one of the highest impact spells in your kit. The next quintessentail thing is that this ability has to give the illusion of counterplay. What I mean is that it only has to LOOK like it can be counterplayed but doesn't actually have to be interactive, whether its counterplay aspects are hidden through the rest of the kit or the ability is only theoratically counterable is up to you. The second way is rather easier.

In the meantime I have decided to design an ADC! And the Q spell goes as follows: Charge a powerful shot and enhance your next auto attack which can be blocked by minions.

W and E: These are the spells that make CertainlyT champions, CertainlyT champions. The absolute most important thing to keep in mind is that at least one (preferably both) abilities piss a lot of people off. Now pissing people off is a piece of cake nowadays. I find Akali a fun champion to play against and boom, 20 downvotes as easy as that. But to truly become the next CertainlyT you have to get this to the next level. You have to make these abilities so abnormaly toxic interactive that even your own team gets pissed off because of it. The best and easiest way to approach this is to add RNG elements into those abilities. Also, alltough this is already clear I guess but I thought I would just point it out anyway, the abilities, if your champion has any resources, can be spammed off cooldown without ever running OOM.

For my champion I thought of this: E: Passive ability: Your auto attacks have a 5% chance to insta kill enemies, additionally your Q now can go through minions. W: Upon activation your auto attacks knock back people (5 seconds uptime 5.1 seconds cooldown)

The ultimate spell: Now I know what you are thinking "dude this spell must be the most interactive thing in his kit!". Actually no, surprisingly enough the R spell is a spell only to ENHANCE the other abilities but not a spell on its own. Let me elaborate.

My champions R spell goes as follows: After succesfully hitting someone with your interactive Q spell they get marked. You can ult marked targets and fire an exceptionally powerful shot that deals 40% max Hp true damage!

As you can see the ultimate has no counterplay on its own but rather works off the counterplayability of another spell. If you couldn't stop the Q you automatically can't stop the R.

Your champion is almost done! Now we get back to the passive! Remember? The one we left out earlier. The reason why we do it now is to make sure the passive has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the kit. If you designed the passive from the beginning you would be clouded with ideas on how to implement it in the rest of the kit in a unique way, we don't want that.

The passive or passives, yes you heard it right, as the designer of a CertainlyT champion you have the unique privilege of adding numerous passives! Whatever they may be they need to have the following in common: They have to be as generic as possible and be put somewhere where it can't be interacted with (for example auto attacks), additionally they have to be buffs to stats or a utility spell that can be activated with the least amount of effort imaginable (again, auto attacks). It isn't needed to hide these spells behind a counterplay mask but if you can, go for it. That gives the fanbase another way to defend the champion design.

My champions passive would go like this: You have longer AA range towards targets with greater health than you. Clearly the counterplay here is to not buy health and go IE on Maokai.

Only one step left! As a true CertainlyT designer you have not wasted a single thought to the lore of your champion, good job! The most elegant way to write a lore is to just follow the newest lore meta in league, which is balantly overpowered characters that shouldn't be in league in the first place. Let me show you an example:

Add'Car is a voidborn, aspect of targon demigod that fights an eternal war. He has a gay Darkin trapped inside of him named Aanuz and a human (also gay) named Frederic Ister that tries to kill the Darkin. When Frederic Ister destroys Aanuz, Add'Car will get his old powers back and rule over Runeterra!

Or something like that, the lore of a CertainlyT champion isn't important anyway

Tadaaa your champion is done! Post your design in the comments to show everyone how good of a CertainlyT you truly are!

Please don't leave any junk here while you go! Yes I'm talking to you Dave!

I wish everyone a nice and interactive day!

y...you can leave now....

No I mean it, seriously fuck off

Forget playtesting, release this already.

You forget that the character should have at least four passives and his passive must be at least two passives.

hi

just to share a comment about CertainT on EU forum, i created a champ in 2 minutes, not using anyway your tecnique, so apologies for incoherency.

i share here

stealth on movement after level 6, doesnt break while attacking. every % crit raise attack damage stat by same a 2 seconds stun skillshot some aoe bullshit

R champion divide in 3 last 30s and all 3 copies attack your target with your same attack damage, crit and AS

i didnt check which skill is which neither the passive. is too much interactive?

Psyladin, the Mindtwister

  • P = "Foul Stench". Any enemy in close range automatically suffers a DoT effect, which is stronger the closer they are.
  • Q = "Mirror of Spikes". Point&Click. Grants a shield to an ally for five seconds. Any damage the target takes is also reflected to the aggressor. Cooldown: 10s
  • W = "Twisted Mind". Short range beam skillshot. Applies random negative status effect to all targets for 2s. Each target may suffer from a different status effect. Cooldown: 15s
  • E = "Embrace the Pain". AoE. Heals for 20% dmg the targets have taken over the last 10s. Cooldown: 20s
  • R = "Global Presence". Your next W auto applies to all enemies on the map, regardless of their location. Cooldown: 90s

Once a shining defender of Demacia, Psyladin one day accidentally came in touch with the Void. The whispering voices drove him mad and not only implanted him dark thoughts, but also provided him with great powers of mind manipulation, which mixed up with his outstanding abilities to support his allies on the battlefield. Psyladin is still human, but likewise a creature that is obsessed with protecting and defending his allies in the most evil and twisted ways.

#My Masterpiece:

#General Clownus Fiestus

**[P] ** Affecting an enemy champion with any of your abilities causes your next basic attack within 6 seconds deals an additional 5-60 + 0.1 AP (scaling with level) bonus magic damage while having 400 bonus range. Attacking an enemy champion with this ability grants you 0.5% of their maximum health as bonus health permanently.

**[Q] ** Active: (channeled skillshot) Channel for 2 seconds and release a powerful magic nova in one direction that deals 80/120/160/200/240 + 0.6 AP magic damage that is increased by 15/20/25/30/35% (no cap) per unit it hits. Cooldown: 10; costs: 60/61/62/63/64 Mana; range: 2000 *Note: Similar to Thresh, the champion model face direction does not update upon casting. *

**[W] ** Active: (self cast) Reflect all enemy CC that is dealt to you are allies within 650 range for 4 seconds to attacker. You also become immune to ally CC effects like (e.g. Bard R, Kalista R, Tahm Kench W) which means you can still attack enemies but can't be attacked because your health bar is effected by the ally untargetability. Cooldown: 16/14/12/10/8 after effect ends; costs: none

**[E] ** Active: (AoE) Places an invisible trap on the ground that activates 0,75 seconds after enemies entered it. Every enemy that is hit by the trap will be marked for 2 seconds. After 2 seconds, the mark expires, dealing 100/160/220/280/340 + 0.4 AP magic damage over 2 seconds and causes enemy champions and pets to lose control over their movement while running around in random pathes for the duration.

[R] Passive: Every 60-30 seconds (scaling down with level) you gain true sight of a randomly selected enemy champion for 5 seconds. Gaining true sight of an enemy while they are camouflaged, stealthed or standing in a brush refunds 80% of the cooldown and grants 5/8/12 gold per second. Active: (point'n'click) Designate an enemy champion to swap places within a range if you have sight on them. This is not blocked by spellshields or black shields. Cooldown: 30/25/20; costs: 100/50/0 Mana; range 4000

[Lore] General Clownus Fiestus was a grand master of trickery in the wars between Runeterra and the void and shut down most void gates himself. Thousands of Void swarms died to his greatness and power before he became a god himself that created entities that were able to create whole galaxies.

[Analysis] [P] is a window of power for GCF where his opponent has to play around his bonus attack range. Also his passive becomes irrelevant as long as his enemy dodges his abilities. [Q] is a very telegraphed, long channeled ability that can be easily interrupted by any hard CC. It is also not dealing that much damage if you are hit first so if you (as a tank) don't want your backline to be damaged that much you just don't try to block the projectile. Also it is not global so it's uncapped damage is basically capped. And it's a skilshot so you can dodge it. [W]You just have to hard CC him BEFORE he casts W! And you can also play around his 4 second duration. Fake an engage so he has to cast W and then attack him after the 4 seconds. [E] The trap doesn't slow you in the first place so it's easy to walk out of it. [R] If you walk around as team it makes GCF jump into your groupt and die. Easy as it is. And it deals no damage so it's shit in bronze.

this was somehow brilliant XD

You cracked me up with Aanuz

Champ: CertainlyT Role: Fill Passive: Ignores player feedback. Also, generates thick skin as he casts abilities or moves around boards Q: Goes invisible for an indefinite (RNG) amount of time. When he comes out of the shadows he strikes with unprecedented ferocity doing 50/60/70/80/90% brain damage to the summoner. W: While invisible, CertainlyT can extend its time for another indefinite (RNG) amount of time and there is a 4/3/2/1/0% chance that board members will enjoy his design decisions while he is invisible on boards. E: CertainlyT moves with incredible speed. He gains 50/60/70/80/90% extra movement speed at his job. He moves so quickly that its impossible to end his job. R: CertainlyT summons one of his champs in real life to fight for him. This summoned champ is fully build, consumed the appropriate elixir, but still hasn't upgraded their trinket. It lasts.....you guessed it...an indefinite amount of time.

Oh look, "CertainlyT is the designer on the Akali VGU"

XxDRAGONsAK47xX1/31/2018, 5:24:14 PM7 votes

I decided to make a ranged melee champion.

Lala the Magical

Q - Power Spike - Your next ranged or melee auto attack does 5% max health in true damage. - Cooldown 6/5/4/3/2 W - Amazing Power -Passive - Every fifth attack on you is blocked and reflected back at the attacker -Active - You activate you super armor that makes you gain 50% armor and MR for 10 seconds - Cooldown 20/18/16/14/12 E - Incapacitate - A tracking skill shot that roots your target for 2 seconds, after the root they are slowed by 30% for 2 seconds. - Cooldown 15/13/11/10/9 R - ULTIMATE POWER! - Boosts all your stats by x2 for 20 seconds while making you invulnerable to CC.- Cooldown 120/100/80 P - Lala can walk through player made terrain. Ranged Auto attacks shred armor while doubling attack speed, while melee auto attacks do double damage.

LORE

Lala was a yordle that lived in Bandle City, until she didn't.... After being kicked out for some reason she went to Targon where she drank from a magical pond that gave her amazing powers. Now she wanders Runeterra looking for trouble.

WrÆth1/31/2018, 8:32:14 PM5 votes

Wait, that looks fun, let me try.

My champ will be called "annoying little bitch" Q: "annoying little bitch" shoots out a projectile that you can redirect to deal a fuckton of damage

W: "annoying little bitch" now has a chance to automatically win the lane based on RNG

E: "annoying little bitch" fires a "skill shot" (by skill, we mean being allowed to completely whiff it and still be more useful somehow) that stuns you for approximately 10 millennia (rounded of course). Target now gets one shot by anything dealing magic damage. Oh, also it has 10 trillion range (rounded of course).

R: "annoying little bitch" dashes forward than backwards, allowing for the sickest outplays that you should definetly put in your bronze 5 zoe montage. non important sidenote: this ability allows you to one shot from 7 nautical miles away (rounded of course)

wait hold up

warpenguin5551/31/2018, 5:14:58 PM5 votes

You forgot one of the most important parts of a Certainly T champion, the hand holding mechanics!!!

Leaf on Bush2/1/2018, 1:09:10 PM5 votes

This would be funny if there wasn't the underlying negativity and a really unfair way of judging a champion designer by generalising and ignoring a lot of things as well as reducing his work to probably only the most recent release.

I am afraid a lot of people who read this will take it way too seriously in get trapped with that idea.

For the record CertainlyT champions are:

Darius Thresh Zyra Yasuo Kalista Zoe I leave it to you to find out if and how much of that above mentioned pattern really applies to all these champions. If you think that Zoe marks a trend then you have to look at the next in the list, Kalista.

Skorch2/1/2018, 8:16:27 AM4 votes

Truely the only way up from here is for CertainlyT to release a champ so horrendously broken, and so uncounterable, that all previous champions look like fucking Ashe. Or have someone else do it and for CertainlyT to rework it to seem like a balance god.

ChuShoe1/31/2018, 7:13:13 PM4 votes

I'd like to imagine CertainlyT is reading this with Mark Tryndamere screaming "HOLD MY BEER"

JarodDempsey2/1/2018, 12:59:56 AM4 votes

This is honestly one of the best posts i've seen on the boards in recent memory because it's absolutely hilarious, it disparages the establishment, and it's entirely true. Get rekt CertainlyT.

HalcyonDweller1/31/2018, 11:27:53 PM4 votes

I approve of the references you make to having parts of the kit remove the counterplay of other parts of the kit. +1

Small Tiddies1/31/2018, 7:48:26 PM3 votes

Don't forget about how it will be on the pbe with tons of backlash yet still ship to live servers and be broken for months afterwards.

Northmund2/1/2018, 7:25:16 PM3 votes

He CERTAINLY should stop making champions... [zombie-brand-facepalm]

Raiyza1/31/2018, 9:20:47 PM2 votes

I'll bite.

Passive: "Fuck off." - Your first auto attack sends the target all the way back to their fountain.

Q- "Hell no." Heal all of your missing health. 1 seocnd cooldown.

W - "Here you go!" - Throws a bomb that stuns all enemy units in the area of effect for 10 seconds.

E - "Really?" - Increases your movement speed by 75% for 10 seconds.

R - "EDKJHSBFSJBFSUJGBFSIJDGVFDSJGBVDSFCDSFDSFDSF" Insta kill target champion.

Did I win?

does anyone know how I can contact the support team?

FlameWulph2/1/2018, 6:24:35 AM2 votes

Q_ skill shot that permanently bounces off minions until it hits a champion. if no minions are nearby it will hit the nearest champion. the q does 100 % more damage for each bounce

W minions randomly drop surrender votes when they die, if you collect all 5 surrender votes you can force the enemy team to surrender

E bugsplat. pick an enemy champion, and bugsplat. Enemy must relog

R A really short cooldown dash that becomes even shorter as you level it up

Oh yea, i almost forgot about the passive Passive after using an ability do 15 more dmg to an enemy with your next auto attack and mark them. What does the mark do? who the fuck cares

Chicken4dinner2/1/2018, 1:23:45 PM2 votes

Passive: After casting a spell so you should be on cooldown, do another thing so your opponent is zoned until your cooldowns finish Q: high ap scaling skillshot with 3 different points of impact you have to be aware of (just dodge it noob) W: Hard cc, make it a stun but call it sleep so people don't get triggered lol xd (btw if you can't dodge q now ur a fucking potato) E: Idk what this will do lol, just make it a damage cantrip so you can get free comet proc (maybe an aoe slow so they can't dodge the stun err sleep)
R: Free flash w but with an escape xd, remember ur q range is absurd and can reach past flash range

Good idea right guys? Zoe

DuskDaUmbreon1/31/2018, 6:12:55 PM1 votes

I misread that passive, and thought it was bonus speed, not bonus range. And then I thought that could actually be balanced for an ADC, potentially, since we want them to kill tanks, not squishes. And speed towards high health targets helps with that.

Hell, even as it is, that would be fine, since it'd allow them to kill more of "backline tanks", like Blitz and Braum.

Fuck, that passive actually would be good, I think. Possibly will be extremely buggy, but would be a good one.

Potchikir2/1/2018, 11:19:06 AM1 votes

ok here is an assassin akali rework Q: shoots a global projectile u once it hits cast again to teleport into the location (leesin q but global) W: an invisibility circle with radius as the range of caitlyn autoattacks E: knockup all enemies near u same range as w PASSIVE: laughing heals 1 hp
