Nice meme. Too bad the XY anime sucks. Ash is DONE, OK? He's not a good main character anymore. Serena would have been a good choice as a replacement if they dropped the forced-in crush.

i agree with him not being a good main character but the show is basically meant for kids hence its basic structure and cardboard characters xy and z anime shows promise though

Was the anime ever good?

Indigo League (generation 1) was pretty good because it made sense that Ash was a bad trainer. He JUST started out on his journey with a Pikachu that hated his guts. At least he was honest about how bad he was and seemed human.

Now, it's at least Season 18, generation 6, and more than 30 episodes into the season. Ash has had 0 improvements to his strategy, Pokemon (Pikachu hasn't evolved and still only knows Quick Attack, Iron Tail, Thunderbolt, and Electro Ball, occasionally remembering that it knows Volt Tackle), and adventures (so hum-drum and repetitive that it's unfun). He keeps trying to make Pikachu fight Ground-Types like Geodude, Golem, Sandslash, and a LOT more. His stubbornness is insanely out of control at this point. He keeps banging his head against a steel wall that has 300-ft-thick titanium plating.

I can't watch it anymore, personally. I tried SO hard to watch the first 3 episodes without saying anything bad. I couldn't find anything GOOD, besides the animation quality (it's passable at this point, but I'm not impressed).

Bro, I literally have not even seen a clip of Pokemon since the very original series, which feels like, what, 15 years ago, at least? I'm so behind on every concept of anime, all the new stuff alienates me so much, I'm completely out of the loop now.

I mean, does anyone really remember stuff like, I dunno, Elf Princess Rayne? Or Serial Experiments Lain? What about Haunted Junction or Azumanga Daioh or School Rumble or Rumbling Hearts? Kanon? Um...Key: The Metal Idol? Nothing? Not even Lucky Star? Lucky Star still rules.

Upvoted for Lucky Star.

Yes, it's just a bunch of schoolgirls living regular day-to-day life and have little quirks that aren't particularly out of the ordinary for anyone but....

It. Still. Somehow. Works.

I'll always have a soft spot for Lucky Star. It's up there with Azumanga Daioh, Rumbling Hearts, and Serial Experiments Lain (among others already mentioned) for when people are talking about "Dude, they just don't make them like they used to" while sipping a mojito after dinner.

I watched Kanon without crying. I have no soul.

Kanon is not a tearjerker. At least, not when you compare it to the somewhat oddly-titled Rumbling Hearts, the relentlessly, violently depressing deconstruction of the common "high school romcom" genre, which is way on the far extreme of that genre. Basically is to high school romance what Neon Genesis Evangelion was to mecha shows.

Never had such a hard time watching a series than Rumbling Hearts. Ever. Kanon doesn't even enter the same universe of "make the audience sad, and don't let them stop" realm. Even though I really liked Kanon and teared up a little.

And...well, like Kanon, it's also based on an H game, because apparently those spinoff anime are created with malice in mind.

Planetarium: The Reverie of a Little Planet (on Steam, actually, and one seriously good VN) comes pretty close, though, albeit it's a little more sci-fi.

It was good in the Hoenn and Sinnoh seasons.

Before that, the makers had no idea what the fuck they were doing. None of the voice actors were very good and the animation was sub-par. It was mostly a cash-grab to get more people to play the games.

After that, B&W made Team Rocket not fun and removed contests. The two things that made Hoenn and Sinnoh somewhat enjoyable. They were then replaced by those Pokemon beauty pageant things in XY, which is really dull and kinda sexist (I'm pretty sure no guys can enter, saying that the ending winner is called a Princess. I mean, contests allowed guys in, and even battle-trained Ash did okay in one of them).

I don't see how the quality of the Pokemon anime is in any way relevant to the joke being made.
