When you're fighting a Rammus...

I wanna know why the player didn't close in and melee. :P
Probably not wanting to be splattered.
Mongooses (mongeese?) have a very low mass compared to other vehicles, and it needs to be traveling at high speeds in order to splatter due to the lack of kinetic energy from the low mass. At worse, the player would suffer low shields if hit by the Mongoose, especially considering a Mongoose of 406 kg has less mass than a SPARTAN who has about 454 kg.

YIKES! Someone did their research! I never knew that difference in mass, let alone that the Mongoose has LESS mass than the players riding the darn things!!!
Additionally, the Mongoose, despite popular belief, does not have the fastest speed out of all UNSC ground vehicles. Although uphill, it tends to be faster for a longer duration of time, the fastest ground vehicle at top speed is the Warthog.
The Mongoose, however, does have the best acceleration, meaning it reaches its top speed the fastest out of the UNSC ground vehicles, but the Warthog has a greater top velocity, meaning the Warthog will outpace a Mongoose in a longer distance.
That's from me speedrunning, btw. I currently have the third fastest run on The Ark Legendary on Halo 3.

It's official!! If I ever need to learn more about the sciences in Halo, I'm going to this guy ^!!!!
Fun science fact:
The Sputnik and Cowbell skulls are similar but modified the game engine differently.
Take the equation of Newton's Second Law of Motion: Force = Mass * Acceleration.
The Sputnik Skull from Halo 2 decreased the mass of all non-terrain objects. This meant that explosions sent objects flying sky-high in the air, but splattering was extremely difficult since reducing mass reduces kinetic energy and momentum for collisions.
The Cowbell Skull in Halo 3, 4, Reach, and ODST increased the acceleration from explosions, collisions, and melees. This basically means Cowbell did the same thing that the Sputnik Skull did but to a lesser extent, and Cowbell did not affect the difficulty of splattering enemies.
You would be correct in a coherent world. However, the game engine humbly disagrees.
Even then, the physics engine takes the Mongoose's mass into consideration for unit collisions, meaning the engine would calculate the change in the kinetic energy of the Mongoose only rather than the combined kinetic energy of the Mongoose and the SPARTAN driving it.
Well then. I guess I was just unlucky all those times.
