The US and the English spell many words differently.

Caliber vs Calibre Armor vs Armour Analog vs Analogue Fulfill vs fulfil Fetus vs Foetus Civilize vs Civilise Sulfur vs Sulphur Aluminum vs Aluminium

There are hundreds more, but this is just an example.

I've heard that in the 1700s when the American Colonists wanted to become independent from the British Monarchy, they changed the way a lot of words are spelled and pronounced.

EDIT: I've just read that the different spelling was started by Noah Webster in the 1820s. He believed the revolutionized America should assert itself by having different spelling. His original dictionary had a lot of weird ones like "wimmen" (women)" and "tung" (tongue), but the final version in 1828 is what the American English is based on.

While I honestly think that making so many small changes to the language was unnessecary, I will completely defend changing the pronunciation of Z to "Zee" instead of "Zed". Pronouncing Z as "Zed" is absolutely ridiculous.

Changing H to "aych" instead of "haych" was kind of a weird choice. I'm not defending that one.
