Struggles of a returning summoner

I played LoL avidly when it was first launched till around the end of 2010 when I stopped completely for my Master's studies. I was a pretty good jungler (and 3 years ago jungling isn't even legit, most teams don't have dedicated junglers) and I won around 300 games in normal reaching level 30.

Now after three years, I find the return to LoL very daunting and challenging for me. The whole game is different. I used to be a pretty good player and sometimes an asset to the team, but now I am just performing very poorly. There's so many new champions that I'm not familiar with...and counter-jungling...it just makes my enjoying this game that much more difficult compared to three years ago. I'm stuck here in the level 30 elo where a lot of players are just too good for me.

Any advice as to how I can get back into the game less painfully?

On the plus side, the community seemed much better than three years ago. Less trolls and ragers, at least from the few games so far.

For getting familiar with new or reworked champs, ARAM's can be nice, although you may want to practice mashing buttons in a bot game to try out the combos. In PvP, one of the best pieces of advice I've seen is to pick just a handful of champs and learn them very well. You'll want a main, and then a few other for when you play other roles or when your main is banned out. If you get very mechanically sound with just a few, you can play well enough to have room for learning how to make calls and rotations between lanes; you're going to make mistakes, and I think learning one champ well is something you can do individually and it helps the most to start with.

I recommend custom matches as well as intermediate match play the customs with friends who know the current meta and of course just regular PvP so that you won't be so penalized in Ranked games.
