I think if you want out of Bronze 5 you should get better and earn it.

I suggested a while back that there should be a tier lower then bronze. This would help you I think because it would take every one in the bronze tier (which is almost 1/2 of the people playing the game) more evenly spread out like they did with expanding the challenger tier. This would make the trolls less frequent and be in the bottom since they lose more games then they win since they are trolling.

You aren't paired based on division, you're paired based on MMR. Divisions are basically cosmetic for everything but end of season rewards. There's plenty of variation in Bronze, even within Bronze V, and the matchmaking system works based on the hidden underlying values.

True, but having a division lower than bronze would also provide valuable information to players - knowing a teammate is "wood 5" would be very different from knowing they're Bronze 5, in terms of being comfortable that matchmaking is working as intended.

That is, while a new tier might not actually fix any matchmaking problems, it would fix people's perception that there are matchmaking problems.

Oh, I don't think there's anything that could fix people's perception of matchmaking problems...

I guess it depends on what the goal of the division system is. I believe there's more people between a B3 and a B1 than there are between a G1 and a D5, but the matchup is probably a lot closer. It would obviously be simple enough to reposition the tier markings by quintile, and the division markings by subquintile. But outside of the two divisions that catch the tails (B5, D1), there's probably a decent skill gradient as you step from division to division. And even with those two, the divisions are big enough to contain more than just the extreme tails.

I don't think your average Bronze Ver runs into anyone on the "anti-Challenger" list. There should be enough people of a comparable skill level that matchmaking should be working okay. The average person in B5 probably isn't much worse than the average person in B4, and are unlikely to run into the players who really are that much worse than the rest. It's just that if you have a teammate who has a truly atrocious game, it's easy to extrapolate and say that they're one of the dregs of B5. It's the same thing as the accusations of MMR boosting in higher tiers —your teammate didn't just have a bad game; there's something specially bad about them that made the game unwinnable.

Some special marking for the lower tail of skill is not really wise to implement, no matter how tactfully it's phrased. Just rude to those down there who legitimately wish to be better, and an invitation to harassment from others.

I guess I phrased my comment rather absolutely - a better phrasing would be, that it would help fix people's perceptions that there are problems.

This is a fair point - I'd be interested to hear people (and Reds) comment on their perception of this, and whether it is therefore fine that bronze has such a large percentage of the league population.

If you're right here, then I'll agree with you, the leagues are fine as they are.

I don't think I agree with you here; A new tier wouldn't be any more of a "special low-skill marking" than bronze currently is, and thus shouldn't invite any more harassment than bronze already does.

See, there's a few problems with that. Wouldn't taking the B5s to S5 instantly be kind of a giant middle finger to, say, a B3 who has been working really hard to get up to S5? And then, if this idea was executed, won't it cause problems for the S5s who are matched with people who are now considered other S5s, but have the skill levels of B5s? And then, when/if those former B5s lose games (and possibly drag others down with them), won't they fall back to where they started?
