ADC's and split-pushing

Hello all.

Like all players, I make mistakes and want to learn from them. And like all players, sometimes I have to figure what my mistakes are.

One common point of contention between my team and I is if and when I split-push as an ADC.

I won't go into the ifs and whens about when I should split-push or not as that's a super broad subject. This account has only made it to Plat V, so I must be wrong to split-push sometimes. But I do believe there are right times.

In this example, a game last night, I'm convinced I was right to split-push. But my team chat during and after the game has left me self-conscious and I wanted to share the scenario with you guys.

I split-pushed twice that game. I was playing Caitlyn. (Match is on another account of similar rank).

First time: bot outer turret is still up. Herald gets popped by the enemy top and I'm at the opposite side of the map. The enemy Talon achieved this by winning his lane very hard (beat Orianna 0-10) and just wrecked the map efficiently.

I figured I wouldn't get to top lane before inner turret fell and there was adequate defence to save inhib tower. All enemies were accounted for, so I finished off the low outer turret and also knocked down the bot inner turret. I considered this a successful counter play, despite getting flamed. I recalled safely, too.

Out inhib tower was successfully defended and several enemy members broke off the attack to respond to me.

Second time:

Dragon is half a minute from spawning, but our jungler has been caught out and killed (fed Talon things). I'm around mid lane.

I didn't believe we could contest a dragon 4 v 5 without smite and that it would also be unwise to try.

Top lane had a large friendly minion wave being built up. All enemies accounted for, so I opted to go top instead of to dragon. All 5 enemies stayed to secure dragon and a couple of teammates died contesting it (you can imagine the pinging I received). I took top inner tower for the dragon. I didn't get out this time. Almost, but Talon got me with multiple wall jumps and flash.

I considered it a good outcome under the circumstances.

We lost in the end. I can't quite remember what lead to it, but we were mostly wiped during a baron fight and the rest of us killed during nexus defence.

My team reported me. A little upset by that as it meant they blamed me more than the 0/14/3 Orianna playing her lane poorly and/or Talon playing the map extremely well.

But that's it for the mega wall of post. I still think I was in the right. I'm posting this to see what you guys think. Either so I can end my self doubt on this specific matter or whether it's something that I'm actually wrong about and need to change.

Many thanks all!

If there's nothing you can do, I would split push, honestly. I wouldn't have gone to the dragon after my jungler got caught out and died though I suppose it depends on the kind of dragon? I'm not going for a water or air dragon; there's no point since both of these are pretty negligible. Especially the water dragon; its value drops pretty drastically after laning.

ADC is like the team's garen-teed damage dealer when it hits teamfight phase, you really shouldn't be splitting as just them as they are prone to being blown up by pretty much any assassin/decent fighter. Tbh I get making the best out of a bad situation if you're out of position for an actual objective and decide to grab X tower, but splitting is generally left to the toplaner/jungler, people who have built in escapes and/or have terrible teamfight power (i.e. tryn and susan)

You reckon I should've stayed for the dragon fight?

Unlike the Herald, I could've reached the dragon. I just figured my two item Caitlyn would be even more food for the enemy when they win 4v5.

If thats the general consensus, I guess I should work on my micro mechanics and gain more confidence in such situations.
