I stand ready for Garen buffs

Hey you all. Most people think that Garen is pretty much a joke or don't actually remember him at all and for a good reason. His lore is kind of lame and his kit is just too simple etc. I still like playing him thought but one thing just amazes me: his ult's cooldown! There are actually only 5 champions with longer cooldowns on rank 1 ultimate (karthus, shen, soraka, noct, tf) and all of these are global! To top this all off Garen's ult is a joke at rank 1; it deals almost no damage to even low targets. I really don't understand what's the point of having 2:40 cooldown on a execute skill. I doubt this post will have any impact because it's not on reddit frontpage but hey at least I tried. Be bold; be just!

TL;DR: Garen's ult is now global range to match the cool down.

Now that the abomination that was DFGaren is gone for good perhaps his ult can get a little tune up. I'm fine with the cooldown staying as is, so long as it's strength makes it required.

Let's be honest, a viable Garen with that buffed passive would be toxic as shit. Sure they should buff the hell out of him, but they need to tone that down when they do.

With the added Gromp helping his first clear and his last buff, jungle Garen is almost viable, It would be nice to allow Garen to play more than one lane.

My ideas: Stats: Base movement speed increased to 350 from 345

Passive: Now heals 0.5/1.0/1.5 from 0.4/0.8/2.0 and is not removed by jungle monsters.

Q: Longer speed boost. Garen leaps toward the target on his next basic attack, increasing his range to 200. (get dunked)

W: Tenacity now stacks additively, Garen's passive regen remains activated for the duration of the ability and can't be removed.

E: Less spins initially, but scales (Not 1:1) with attack speed. Also applies on-hit effects to minions and neutral monsters. This is a slight nerf to his early game damage output, but the scaling should be enough to improve his lategame. No longer slows Garen's movement through units when he is using ghost or phantom dancer.

R: Range increased to 550 from 400 (I really don't wanna touch the early CD on this thing, it's always up when I need it during the laning phase, but requires suicide rushes to pull off during teamfights)

If you noticed, Riot is pulling away from giving champions that are simple to play competitive power. Garen is as simple as they come. QEWR, bam. As such, Garen doesn't rely on skill, he relies on stats. Riot doesn't want a stat stick being top tier. Makes sense when you think about it.

Riven was the Garen Riot wanted all along (Resourceless AD fighter)

Sorry but no buffs for poor little Garen, he's really just a tank now, and we all know how tanks are in the current meta....

redniwediS5 votes

We know indeed. With proper teamwork they are borderline OP, but with little to no teamwork they are utter trash.

lojician1 votes

If this was true they'd be used more than half the time in pro play. It's more like with proper teamwork they're competitive with a second mage and otherwise they're utter trash.

redniwediS1 votes

Pros are more than capable of using a true tank correctly, but they can also use champions that are actually OP, instead of champions who are sometimes borderline.

lojician1 votes

I don't understand what you're trying to say. You claim tanks are op under the right circumstances but the pros would be those 'right circumstances' and tanks aren't even good enough to be used half the time. Are you saying "tanks are totally op in the pros guys, they're just replaced half the time by a second mage because those are even more op!"?

Adcs, supports, and mages are much more 'op' classes. They are used every game and not having them makes you much more likely to lose. Tanks are not like this, they're just clinging to viability. Are you just defining everything that can be played competitively to be op because of the huge ratio of LoL champions that are basically not playable at that level?

redniwediS1 votes

Tanks have two main uses, damage soaking and CC utility. Certain team compositions do not need both of these, or simply use multiple champions to bring them both along. Most people would rather take the damage and utility of a Jarvan over the much higher damage soak and utility of a Maokai, particularly if you have a Lulu or Janna to assist with damage soaking.

All I'm really saying is that while true tanks are no longer necessary they are still very strong when used properly.

If your building Garen like a tank, you aint playing Garen.

Garen synergizes extremely well with item 3071 , and a team that can follow up on the armor-shredded targets makes garen so much more effective. But no matter how you build garen, his damage is going to fall off late game because people will kite him to no end.

Riven, with her numerous gapclosers and long range execute, does not get kited late game.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

When did I say Black Cleaver was bad?

There is no point in taking Garen if you are going to build full tank, or only BC and then full tank. There are other champions who would do his job better.

Garen synergizes very well with Youmoo's, BC, and Infinity Edge. At least two of those should be bought most games. Three if you think you can get away with it, which sometimes you very well may be able too. Even Hexdrinker can be a good buy, just last game I had to itemize specifically against auto attackers, and hexdrinker allowed me to get away with building full armor, even tho the enemy had a Katarina.

BC is only good if you have muiltiple teamates who can benefit from it, or if your adc is actually carrying. People really underestimate champions like Garen.

Darius is probably in the worst spot out of all the "Fighter" champions. Mostly because he has no built in sustain, nothing to help him tank, and is kinda slow. Darius could use some love.

im actually maining darius top this season, and I don't think he really needs any, due to the fact that he wrecks anything top that isn't ranged. And even if they are, if you get one successful gank, it's pretty easily to snowball from there. He is in a good spot imo.

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

Doesn't Darius counters Garen easily....

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

Yea, he does lol. Darius doesn't really have any counters that are melee. Renekton maybe.

Rinky Dinky1 votes

Irelia is hard for Darius to deal with I feel.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

eh not really. you max w instead of q.

The last Irelia I fought made me never want to play Darius again lol

And then Garen gets kited to hell late game because of the silly amount of knockup and self-peel these days.

I really, really love Garen, he is my favorite top laner and charging into battle with him is a blast, not to mention his ult is insanely satisfying to use.

But late game people just are able to stay away from him and chip away at his health to nothing. Which is why Riven is unfortunately more popular.

Rinky Dinky2 votes

They cant kite you if someone on your team cc's them.

Garen needs an initiator. As does Darius, Gangplank, and Mordekaiser.

If your team has someone with AoE lockdown as a support or Jungler, Any of those champions can be very good picks.

BeatzBoyFTW3 votes

He's a bruiser tank. When he builds tanky, he only builds it for himself

This is the only buff Garden needs, and it's all on his q. -make it a Skillshot gap closer that has to hit to apply the silence and damage when he's not affected by movement impairment. -if he is slowed, make it work just as it does now -if he's rooted, have it remove the root, and give no mobility bonus otherwise. Hey look, garen is viable

TotalJerk4 votes

Garen is one of the few pure melees left without a leap/dash left in the game.

Not only is "make it better, but a skillshot" the cheapest method of adding counterplay and viability, Giving him what's basically a Lee Sin Q with a silence destroys his identity.

The way to buff him while reinforcing his identity is by playing at what he already uses to reach his target: his speed boost, slow removal, tankiness, and tenacity. Sure he doesn't have an instant gap-closer, but the intention was that he could just rush directly into the enemy line and hit up squishies/ ult-nuke any wounded hiding behind their allies.

The problem is that the League of CC has hit him hard, so many characters have stuns, roots and knockups(which tenacity has no effect on) now that Garen's slow removal is almost worthless and teams can just pour on so much hard CC that the brief tenacity afforded by W hardly matters.

GloriousKaiser1 votes

Riot won't touch him. He's already been semi-reworked and "visually updated".

His kit is full of IFS and BUTS. It gets really annoying.

  • Great early game damage BUT it falls off no matter how well you do.
  • Only achievable IF you build hyper expensive items like IE which have been nerfed for bruisers like Garen.
  • TANKY BUT you still have to build lots of armor/mr to compensate.
  • A Powerful ultimate ability.... but the cool down.
  • Great at getting into a fight BUT 1 cc after he removes the slow puts him back into square one.
  • Judgement is a powerful ability BUT you can't even properly get off the full damage because it slows you through minions.
  • Passive is nice...IF I were a pansy. OOh you hurt me, better run off into a bush to regen. Disgusting.

Why does Garen have to itemize for crit? He's already got to build a bunch of other stats to make up for his sub-par mobility and lategame.

To what effect does Garen build Tank? He only builds tanky to benefit himself. If he can't protect his allies, and can't do damage because he built full tank, then he's going to be shredded when he's the last to die, locked down and alone.

It's obvious that the ultimate is outdated and a poor ability. Which deserves a shorter cooldown? A 5 man global strike? Or a single man melee execute?
