How to Play Lissandra

So over the last few couple of days I've tried to use Lissandra effectively, but it's almost always gone wrong. In the laning phase I feel I can poke melee champions but whenever I get into a trade I get shafted. I throw out a q first while they walk around the minions and they've probably jumped on me by now so w gets used and I try to e out. But by then I've been hit by a couple of painful auto attacks and abilities, usually that ends up with me losing too much hp for that to have been worth it. Not to mention my auto attack is delayed and does low damage. If I trade too much my mana will run out. Trying to build cdr and health item 3165item 3027 makes me lose out on damage. but If I build mana, health, and damage item 3027 item 3089 I won't have enough cdr to fight people with. And if I dare to build cdr and dmg after I come out of my r im gone.

In teamfights I can't engage because e is slow and predictable (thank you icy claw outline), and it seems all I can do is wait around for someone on their team to attack or my own team to attack, but when my team does attack I'll go in with e>w>r>death, if I'm a midlaner that means I didn't bring enough because I'll die straight after my r unless I use hourglass, but given the problem with building lissandra by the time midgame teamfights roll around my damage will be lacking if I build that or my r may already be off of cooldown due to an earlier engagement. If I'm a top laner I failed my role as a tank because even if I did build tanky my damage was negligible and or predicted + negated due to the slow nature of e.

Even if I make it to late game, it gets worse because the carries which i do dmg to are all nestled in the backline which is hard to get to and going in up close runs the risk of being caught out pressing w and r in panic and dying while only having dealt damage with 2 spells. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it feels like Orianna or Vladimir would fulfill her role much better.

If I chose Ori instead in the mid lane I'd have the aoe cc and I wouldn't need to build any hp due to better range and being able to ult off of the tank that went top or in the jungle. Vlad has better poke than she does because people can't just move around the minions to put q at a manageable range, and in teamfights i'll just r or w to get to the squishies and actually survive due to the lifesteal and not being easily caught out due to w, plus I'll have damage from w e and r all being aoe.

How do I play lissandra effectively, and should I even given the better less counterable by people with range or sustain options?

It sounds like your trying to do too many things at one. You can make a good lisandra build out of any of the items mentioned, but your going to sacrifice something, and that's Okay.

Lissandra is what I would call, an Engage mage. You whoop your way in, lock up the enemy team while doing moderate amounts of damage. After which, whether you chose survival, or killing a squishy is somewhat a choice of build. You probably want CDR as you have a lot of CC in your kit. You could probably trade the highest levels of damage for the CDR if you had to, Basically a Liss, you shouldn't be trying to get a kill by yourself.

In teamfights I can't engage because e is slow and predictable (thank you icy claw outline),

Shouldn't be a problem for a number of reasons. 1) going into a group greatly increases your chances of landing your abilities. and 2) the enemy team should not be able to dodge the ability in the exact same way. So even the threat of an engage can break up the enemy team. This is just something you have to practice. Alternatively if you flash engage, you'll still have that ability for the chase afterward.

And if I dare to build cdr and dmg after I come out of my r im gone.

If your doing things right, this should never be a problem. If you engage at the right time, your team should follow up, and the enemy should be on the retreat. The only way this could goof up is if your team left you for dead. That said, I would probably take a tankier build, so that you don't have to rely on your ult for survival. (giving you more options.)

Personally, I would Go RoA, followed by Lucidity boots. And then getting extra CDR from either a FQC or a Morrelo's. From their you might want to get an Hour glass. But if your opponents are AP heavy, you could try an Abyssal scepter, which would give you offensive and defensive power. But high damage shouldn't be a priority.

its easy : 8 magic pen 15 ap 15%cdr lvl 18 200 hp lvl 18 build : item 3027 NO MATTER WHAT + item 3158+ item 3136 OR item 3001 + item 3157 + item 3089+ item 3135

item 3027+ item 3020 +item 3165+ item 3157+ item 3089+ item 3135

try to poke with q and use minions for hit ,, use your e sometimes because if you only use it when your jungler is coming it will be too obvious from a old lissandra main :*
