EDIT: Jbels suggested that Riot could also just make it so that assists work as well as kills. Is there any downside to this?

EDIT2: This post is now dying as it's more than a day old, but WukongBR brought up a good point. If the reason for the above is that it's supposed to be a solo challenge between you and Illaoi, why can her friends attack your spirit but yours can't help with tentacles?

Honestly, I think most people don't do it on purpose. They just don't know. In fact, I didn't knew either until reading that on the boards. There's mutiple problems with Illaoi's E.

STOP WRITING FUCKING PARAGRAPHS RITO. Golden rule : if you can't sums up what an ability does in a tweet, that's a bad ability. And you know how many letters there's here ? ONE THOUSAND. That's more characters than some champion's entire kit, passive included (I'm not making this up. Check Annie).
Most people will read Illaoi's abilities in the lobby to know how to counter her. They'll have between a minute and 30s to understand her kit. So when you write your description, if you can't refrain yourself from writing a novel, at least highlight counter-intuitive parts. Crucial details that can't be guessed just by fighting her, like how hitting her reduce the duration by 1s per hit or the fact you must kill three tentacles to be fred no longer the time you spent being a vessel, are lost to the reader just scanning the text since it's just one sentence lost in a sea of obvious bullshit like "if she hurts your spirit she hurts you too".
Most people will assume they know everything about an ability after seeing it in-game and reading it one time. That means that if they miss some informations because of the lack of clarity in your description, it'll be forever lost to them. So don't screw this up. Writing good champions description is largely overlooked by Riot, but it's far more important than doing fancy joke animations.

To be fair, probably half the people who do this do not realize it's not helping. So upvote people, peeps need to know this- I didn't realize I wasn't helping until a Blitz AFK'd because I last hit the tentacles on Howling Abyss. I had no idea what his problem was.

Assists should count too.

However, the main thing is clarity. Because the 'vessel' status lasts for a minute, there are so many times that I arrive to a place with multiple teammates and one of them is a vessel.

But I only notice that one of my teammates is a vessel when I see a tentacle spawning on a terrain wall, and my main concern is "oh shit a tentacle, let's get rid of it so that Illaoi can't make any use of it".

And I'm not gonna click through 4 ally portraits to check their debuff bars to see the vessel debuff.

We need an icon over the person so that we actually know who the vessel is

the vessel visual effect are just plain bad for teammate when fighting (try illaoi in poro mode it's fun how poeple don't see it) Actualy, since they introduce champion icon with garen and kindred, I wouldn't mind having a tentacle one beside the hp bar of a vessel

My theory is that the passive desire to steal farm kicks in whenever players see a possible gold source like one of Illaoi's tentacle spawns.

The fucking thing should only SPAWN three tentacles instead of requiring the target to KILL three tentacles. Such a horrendously designed ability at almost every level.
