A D5 Jungle main's constructive criticism of the patch.

TL:DR, The patch is settling out to be better than we expected, but there are a couple issues. Champs that can take Precision tree primary are too strong. The jungle is even more snowbally than before. Mages still can't jungle.

Now that the patch has started to settle out while people figure out the meta and the pathing, the earlier freak out is going away. In the first couple days, it wasn't uncommon to see junglers lower level than supports. Now that people have figured out where the XP is at, it's fine. Getting first scuttle is still super important, but not to the extent people made it out to be. It's a little absurd how important krugs are for experience now. You get more experience from krugs than you do from buffs(unless you're cashing in catchup xp). The game is extremely snowbally in the jungle right now. Since champs that are strong early are meta(which was the goal of the patch, so kudos), whichever one gets ahead early just strangles the enemy. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it needs to be acknowledged. Being 4 levels ahead or behind in the jungle is not uncommon now.

The biggest complaints I have is with the attack speed removal from machete, and losing the MS on runic echoes.

With the machete change, the problem is that champions that can take Precision as their primary tree get an insane tempo boost over any champion that can't. Here's an example of the tempo difference. I'm a rek'sai main. Rek'sai can take PTA or Electrocute and both are considered 'meta.' If I hop into practice tool with PTA, it takes me 16 seconds to take red buff with no leash. If I do the same with Electrocute(precision 2nd), it takes 18 seconds. That's approximately a 2 second difference PER CAMP that you gain if you can take precision primary.

This is fine on Rek'Sai because she can just switch to taking PTA. But what if you are an Elise? What if you're a Zac? Or a Rammus? Some champs just can't take precision primary, and get left in the dust by champs that can. In my opinion, that's a large part of why graves is so dominant this patch. He's a champ that thrives on tempo, and he gets a free tempo boost that most other champs can't.

The other major problem is that the jungle item got nerfed and it was billed as a buff. If the goal was to allow new junglers to jungle, they failed. Nidalee, Eve, and Elise can still be played. They are about the only 3 that can still be played. Fiddle can find some success since nobody can play against him, but Nid, Eve, Elise are the only three who are consistently playable. If you'll notice, all three of them have a consistent healing or damage reduction in their kit. Eve has passive, and can full-heal off raptors. Nid clears so fast she doesn't take damage, and has her heal if she has the mana. Elise has her spiderlings to soak damage and heals in spider form. The thing that will allow more ap champs or mages to jungle is an item or rune that lets them take reduced damage from jungle monsters.

Overall, this patch is fine. Champs that can take Precision tree primary are too strong. The jungle is even more snowbally than before. Mages still can't jungle.

That is a pretty big contradiction. How can this patch be fine if the primary goals were to reduce snowball, even out the playing field in the jungle to introduce more champs to the jungle, instead its the opposite because only dualer junglers are viable now.

By "fine" I mean everybody who was flipping their shit about junglers being useless now were wrong. It's not like the jungle was completely gutted. They didn't necessarily achieve their goals, but they didn't remove the role from the game like people were saying on day 1.

So the jungle is even more snowbally then before.

Jungle diversitiy is shot

mids are taking Smite now.

--- Patch isn't that bad guys! Honest!

Mids aren't taking smite. Shiphtur was taking smite, and even he said it was a troll pick for the lulz.

Jungle diversity is shit, but I mentioned that as part of my problems with the patch. I also explained why it was shit. Both from the perspective of why the top champs are so strong, and why the weak champs are so weak.

Overall, Jungle's in significantly better shape than I expected it to be after reading the patch notes. I'm not saying it's good, I'm saying it's fine.

Mobility has always been the key of warfare. No mobility=no life or kills.

Hence why everyone who can get away with it runs Celerity/Waterwalking right now.

Nid clears fast?

lol

Does she not anymore? She used to be the fastest jungler in the game. I haven't personally played her in seasons.

She hasn't cleared fast since Season 8 Preseason update. They boosted jungle mob HP on the primary monsters so she can't erase them, gave them more damage.

Her itemization was also in various ways cannibalized by Mage changes, and since now all items pretty much revolve around "mana" items, she no longer has a build path. And other junglers have BETTER build paths.

She's the squishiest jungler to begin with, and they generally destroyed her mana sustain as well, and her heals are so weak. She almost always is low HP on grinding the first 2-3 clears, which makes her a target.

Nid's clear isn't as good now, especially in the early levels. She takes a lot more damage now and is vulnerable to invades. Graves is by far the #1 pick. His damage is insane from level 1, no one can duel him, he takes virtually no damage and has good tankiness and mobility from level 1.

I started playing Graves on my plat 5 account. Currently 10-2 after not playing him for the last 2 years. He's definitely not balanced this patch. He's just insanely strong at all the important points of the game.

I haven't been a jungle main for long, I'll be honest. Switched to it at the end of last season after I realized that I was having an easier time climbing as a jungle than an ADC. But I can tell you one thing; League has never been less fun for me than it is right now. I've played league A LOT, and switched from maining one position to another. And I can say that this is the most punished I have ever felt for playing anything that isn't an S or A tier champion.

Personally, I tend to be one of those hypsters who doesn't like playing the super OP champs, and would rather make my pool out of viable but less popular ones. Now, that's not always the case, and I make sure to be able to preform on the meta champs as well. But right now, it's basically signing up to lose to pick anything outside of the top 8 or so junglers.

Maybe I just suck. I've never played jungle with a super aggro playstyle, always preferring to contest opjectives and play for team fights more than repeat gank to snowball a lane. And that playstyle got me to mid plat during the preseason and early this season, but now I have to relearn everything, because only one jungle style can be played now.

IMO, this patch killed jungle diversity, lowered the champion pool a lot, and reinforced everyone playing with the exact same playstyle. I mean, if that's what Riot wanted, then good job. But that isn't what you said you were setting out to do. So I hope you guys have some kind of plan to fix this if you don't plan on admitting it was probably not a good direction to go in and backpedaling.

Play Rek'Sai. She's been my main for ages, and she's insanely strong this patch but still very far from meta slave. Make sure for runes you're doing PTA/Triumph/Alacrity/Coup/Celerity/Waterwalking I've been playing on my plat 5 smurf to get a handle on the meta before tryharding again. I've won my last 6 rek'sai games with a KDA of 7. Only one of the games was even close, and that's because it went to 44 minutes. I still ended 13-8-19.

I don't disagree with what you're saying OP, but I think you're missing one gigantic tid-bit:

The changes murdered diversity.

Even with the pathing having been figured out, playing outside of the S / A tier junglers is currently extraordinarily punishing, and creates a passive liability which is completely unreasonable.

TheNoghri1 votes

The big issue ruining diversity is just how bonkers precision primary and sorcery secondary is with the updated jungle items. The highest rank I've ever been is D5. On my Plat 5 smurf, I've won my last 14 jungle games in a row taking precision primary sorcery secondary. That includes 7 graves games, 6 rek'sai games, and 1 chogath game. Even on chogath, I ended a 22 minute game with a kda of 4.5, 7cs per minute, most damage taken in the game by 10k, and up 3k gold. IN 22 MINUTES. The shear amount of tempo you get from the interaction between the attack speed and movespeed from runes paired with the increased on-hit damage on machete means NOTHING can keep up with you.

Edit: Here's the op.gg of my smurf if you don't believe me. http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=instantostrich
