Ap varus is so underrated. I have been playing it recently, and you can still easily oneshot people even without DFG. In that game, I REALLY didn't wnat to go against Ahri, so I went against renekton and was able to kill him/push him out of lane multiple times. Given, Lee didn't gank at all so.. Anyways, any other Ap varus players out there have any insights?
I've run him a few times. It's a fun alternate playstyle, and works great against tanky teams. I remember one game where I took a Vlad down from over 50% max HP to zero in one detonation of W. So satisfying! But laning is just brutal if enemies have any harass.
He really is pretty awesome. I don't own him yet (need to grind IP for more Runes and Champs), but I spam play him whenever he is on free week. AP Varus is one of the most underrated champs in the whole game, especially now that tanks are strong.
I usually level Q>W>E and then max RWQE, because W isn't that useful level 1 without another ability to proc the stacks.

. After that, you have to decide between either full AP Burst Varus or a more on-hit style AP Varus. I prefer the burst build, so I usually follow up with

(If you build Luden's, it is best as a first or second item for an early game spike), but you can also opt for the on-hit style which I build like this: 
. I basically always build a sheen item on Varus, so Lich bane is core on both of these builds (because your pattern of stacking and popping stacks with abilities gets a lot of those procs off). Void staff can be swapped out for a Wit's end in the on-hit build if you need more AS and some MR.
