Thresh - Melee / Ranged

For the purpose of item 3109 and now the new patch 7.5 "Bond Of Stone" both the item and the mastery read as: "something something something - halved if you are ranged." Stupid obvious with most champs. But what does this mean for Thresh?

Based on how item 3302 item 3097 item 3401 work with Thresh's auto attacks, I would consider him to be a ranged champ; but we all know that sometimes these things are not consistent.

(Thresh isn't really one of my mains but this sort of information is useful to know, you know?)

Also made a post about this.

Thresh is the only ranged Tank support. With a lot of tank items being optimized for melee, it really hurts him. However, people who like to play AD Thresh would miss the addition of Rapid Fire Cannon and Runaan's Hurricane.

I don't know if Riot could make a midway.

To be completely honest, if I do play Thresh I tend to just stick with item 3301. I know that personally I would prefer to play with item 3302 but it distracts to much from trying to actually do your job. Obviously I am able to last hit minions, but your ADC obviously has more AD than you do as Thresh and so most of the time unless you have a full stack of flay you end up getting "out last-hit" when trying to proc it. This leads to having concentration leeched onto "stealing last hits with flay passive" than actually looking for potential picks / watching the map / etc.

But still; for the purpose of item 3109 and the new mastery I would love to know the interactions.

Let me know if you find out? :)

If you really want to know: Thresh is a ranged champ. That's the TL;DR version.

To explain, he uses a chain hook/kusarigama. These weapons are like whips, but with a hook/scythe attached to the end. These were used to fight others from a range, whilst still keeping the skilled aspect of mastering the weapon.

Now, Thresh basically has one of these. If you buy certain items, you can instantly notice that:

  1. Rapid Fire Cannon increases his range
  2. He can use Runaan's Hurricane
  3. He is prohibited from building Titanic/Ravenous Hydra.
  4. He doesn't get the bonus execute damage for the Relic Shield family.

This implies that he is, in fact, a ranged champion, meaning items such as Knight's Vow or masteries such as Stoneborn Pact get the reduced effectiveness.
