Gangplank's Q and Ravenous Hydra

It seems that Gangplank's Q acts as a melee attack with the Ravenous Hydra still giving him the AOE with it. Now I'm not sure if this is a bug or if its intended for it to be that way. The only reason I'm even bringing this up is because I was playing some normal games last night and saw it on the other team. Anyone know if its meant to be that way?
