I think its a good idea, i want to test it too, but .... with a premate team (at least 3 people. Botlaner. Support. Midlaner).
Normally the support can roam mid to gank that lane or he can put deep wards, but he can only roam when is adc is safe. Its more likely to get engaged for your adc if he is in a 1v2 situation, so you can only roam when the lane is pushed or your adc is in base/dead already :P.
Playing duomidlane against a standard 1 top 1 mid 1 jungle 2 bot strategy would "not have" this risk, because its a 1v1 situation if the support roams. In addition the support can have influence on the whole map by ganking other lanes, including the enemy jungle.
One problem to solve is: What champion do we pick for botlane?? This champ will have to fight 2v1 and therefore get zoned away from exp and cs. In the worst case scenario there will be a tower dive which will be covered later in detail. So the requirements are:
- Fast waveclear without items (you wont get the gold for them and have to prevent enemy first blood tower and dives)
- CC (in case of tower dives you have to be able to root one the one tanking the tower and at least get this kill or even more)
- Sustain (in case of playing against a poke lane, Karma/Sona/....)
- Escape (in case of playing against an engaging lane, Thresh/Blitzcrank/....)
- Be useful without many items
These are many condition and there are not many champions which fit in this role, I was thinking about champs that have at least some of the needed abilities: Morgana (Black shield + Root + wave clear with W = ungankable + undivable), Galio (taunt, dash, q waveclear), Lux (E wave clear, shield, double root), Zoe (wave clear, sleep, escape with additional summoners), Gangplank (ranged wave clear, "qss").
You see there is no champion who can do all, but there are ways to avoid several dangers, thats why you have runes, summoners and a team ;D.
Against Towerdives:
- Invade the enemy jungler with your jungler to steal his camps or even kill him. Getting him behind will mean less gold and less lvl than yor botlaner which makes dives more difficult.
- Counter gank. You will have the opportunity for deepward anyways so preparing for against a 1v3 towerdive will be easier. After the enemy has tanked some towershots and has burnt some crucial spells join the fight and clean up.
Against pushing lanes:
Again easy gank because they will be far away from their tower. Problem is that the enemy jungler can wait in a lane bush and counter your counter gank (wtf mind plays xD). Your botlaner probably wont get the opportunity to ward those bushes.
Possible runes: "Minion dematerializer"
Against pokelanes:
Possible runes: "Biscuit delivery", "Ravenous Hunter"
Smite the gromp or the golems. If you use "Unsealed Spellbook" you will get 25% cdr on summoner spells which gives the enemy jungler a smaller window to gank you.
At midlane: pick a support who can zone the enemy. The "exp advantage" could be nullified. You need at least one poke champ midlaner and/or support to force the enemy midlaner base early for free roaming and pushing ("Demolish" will helps a lot).
A possible strategy would be: roaming support (with cc) and jungler ganking the toplaner and getting him ahead for first blood tower on toplane ("Demolish" will helps a lot). The toplaner keeps pushing his lane. He will be too far ahead for the enemy toplaner to defend the tower or survive a towerdive. If the enemy jungler helps toplane, 4 people go botlane for a dive and take the next tower. Then you could reset and/or ganking mid next.
I think the main problem about uncommon strategies like duo mid is just that it hasn't been tested enough, like what and how do things work here, how to react, what champions to pick. Seriously just give it a try. Especially now in the preseason, people are testing many different things and maybe this could be the new meta, with all the new runes which are really benificial if chosen correctly.
If you still want to try you can add me.
Let's give it a try and share our experience with others. Maybe we can even convince them ;D, but the main point is that someone has to try and test.
