Smiting Champions instead of Camps

It has happened several times now that when i'm trying to steal a camp or something and then a champion is at the exact same place as the thing i'm trying to smite, i smite the champion instead of the camp or whatever. I find this very confusing when i'm trying to steal things but my smite hits the player instead of the camp. Is there any way i can target monsters only or something so i wont miss the smite?
