AP build variety

I've been playing league for about two years now mostly with AP builds out of preference, and the thing that has always bothered me is that it feels like I have very little variety when it comes to building any of the bigger power items (you know what I'm talking about) because they all generally require the same build path with little variation. Amplifying spell tome, blasting wand, needlessly large rod. Honestly, I don't think there is a single AP item that doesn't require at least one, if not more, of these three. There is a bit more variation it seems when building AD, but it is still rather boring to build certain items when you gather the exact same tools time and time again for completely different items. Really this post is mainly for the amplifying spell tome because it an essential item for so many build paths, but after building it close to ten times in just one game, it becomes kind of tedious and no longer makes the aspect of buying items fun anymore.
