general opinion on damage Runes
which is better? straight AD or AP or penetration?

Completely situational.
Pen can be better most of the time. If you are poor on IP, get all of the t2 runes and just get pen t3 first.
I find that pen is pretty situational depending on what champion you play and most times you'll want the extra AD or AP.
