Permanent skin from chest

Is it possible to get an ultimate permanent skin from a regular chest. I got dj Sona from a chest and I just clicked it away without paying any attention. I couldn't find it anymore as a shard and it's in my skin collection. So I thought I got it permanent but maybe I activated it somehow? Also, i only had 200 orange essence so it's not possible I upgraded it. After all, my question is: can i get a permanent skin from a chest?

High tier skins don't need orange essence and automatically redeem themselves.

Really? I've gotten a skin shard of DJ Sona though. It was like in early season 7, did they change the system?

Yes, it's been introduced a few months ago.
