Gangplank Trial by Fire bug?

I just finished playing a game against a GP, and it seemed as though his trial by fire was being triggered by his q. Now, on the ability it clearly says it only triggers on a melee attack. Am I just imaging this or has anyone else experienced this horseshit as well? I Honestly wouldn't mind if it weren't true damage but it is. Thoughts?
