Zz'rot Portal, why was it made?

Zz'rot appears to be a rather common item in most games that I play, I was wondering if I could get someone who could explain to me why it was created. I read another post on the topic, however, the reason it was created was to allow team to split push without having to choose champs to split push. Personally i find that to be rather odd, why create an item to do something that a champ was created to do, or in the very least, has a kit that allows them to pull this off without any serious drawbacks ( I.E. etc). Riot please respond whenever you got a minute.
